Until a few years ago, man made little use of duckweed species. Their unique properties, such as their phenomenal growth rate, high protein content, ability to clean wastewater and thrive in fresh as well as brackish water, were only recognized by a few scientists. Prior to 1988 duckweed had been used only in commercial applications to treat wastewater in North America. In 1989 staff of a non-governmental organization based in Columbia, Maryland, The PRISM Group, initiated a pilot project in Bangladesh to develop farming systems for duckweed and to test its value as a fish feed. An earlier project in Peru investigated the nutritional value of dried duckweed meal in poultry rations.

Extractions: Improving policy and infrastructure for sound fisheries management Agrodev assisted the Federated States of Micronesia in the strengthening of government- related institutions, and the development of fisheries-related infrastructure. The initial assistance determined and analyzed the biological, geographic, economic, social and political dimensions of the fisheries sector, and prepared a fisheries policy. Agrodev also provided technical assistance to the Micronesia Government and the Micronesia Longline Fishing Corporation in the design and procurement of a tuna fishing fleet. Technical assistance for vessel design and procurement consisted of preparing vessel concept design and specifications, preparing tender documents, and evaluating tenders. On the advice of Agrodev, it was ultimately decided that the purchase and refit of used vessels was a more economical solution than building new vessels. Agrodev again assisted with the design and the approval of the refits. Micronesia's fishing fleet was optimized by purchasing and retrofitting used vessels.

Aquaculture is a significant contributor to the provincial economy, and most aquaculture jobs are located in coastal communities. With its climate, good water quality and sheltered bays, British Columbia's coastline is well suited for both finfish and shellfish aquaculture. In 2002, the farmgate value of the salmon, shellfish and trout sectors combined was $304.5 million. Farmed salmon is B.C.'s largest agricultural export product. There are three main species groups currently cultured in British Columbia waters: Commercial fisheries are also a significant contributor to the provincial economy and the social fabric of numerous coastal communities. This industry includes the commercial harvesting of more than 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and marine plants from both freshwater and marine environments. In 2002, the landed value of the salmon, groundfish, shellfish and herring fisheries combined was $363.8 million.
