Extractions: April 1998 As a high school student, Tsara Borsting began volunteering at the United States Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory. There she discovered a whole world of information and technology that could be used to help endangered species. Now at 17, Tsara is on staff at the Lab, contributing her expertise to a very special Internet project that is used to help people and animals around the world. Photo:Tsara Borsting The InSite: What can you tell me about the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Forensics Lab? Tsara: TI: What exactly do you do there? Tsara: I write a lot of web applications. Most of them have to do with taking existing data bases and organizing them and making it possible for people to query information via the Internet! TI: What kind of data bases are we talking about? Tsara: The one that's posted on our web site Asian Medicinal Endangered Species Database is a database of Asian medicinals frequently seen in trade that contain endangered species . The Forensics Lab actually gets a large quantity of these medicinals because they're smuggled illegally into the country. The popularity of Asian medicinals makes poaching very lucrative. TI: The Endangered Species Act makes it illegal to buy or sell endangered species or parts from those animals. People know that, so why are they continuing to buy these products?

Extractions: Photo courtesy of IUCN, The World Conservation Union by Patrick Caron, Tashany Gordon, Brittany Johnston, William Miller, Robbie Peter, Jennifer Butler, Derrick Gormley, and Thomas MacLean The jaguar is the largest and most powerful of the American members of the cat family, and is the second largest member of the cat family in the world. The jaguar is larger then the leopard. The jaguar's coat has different colors, but they are usually yellow-brownish with black spots, like leopards. Some jaguars are even white. The jaguar's coat on its side and back is spotted with large black rosettes, each consisting of a circle of spots surrounding a central spot. The spots on its head, legs, and underside are solid black. An adult male jaguar may be four to seven feet long, excluding the long tail. Its tail is about 45 to 75 centimeters long. The jaguar stands about three feet high at the shoulder, and it weighs up to 300 pounds when full grown. The jaguar has heavily muscled forearms and shoulders that add strength for capturing its prey. It has a massive head, and long thick legs. The jaguar's hindlimbs are longer than its forelimbs to improve jumping. Its forepaws are equipped with long, retractile claws to help grab and hold its prey. The jaguar has a rough tongue that is designed for peeling the skin away from the flesh of its prey, and to peel the flesh away from its prey's bones. The jaguar has loose belly skin which allows the animal to be kicked by its prey with little chance of injury.

AFEW's second project was to establish the first educational nature sanctuary in independent Africa. Last year AFEW brought over 40,000 African school children to the center free of charge to teach them how to conserve their animal heritage. Children now overflow the center, so more classroom space is needed. Orphans from Nairobi experience all the creature discomforts of their home country as a giraffe pokes its nose into their business yesterday. It was the first-ever visit to the Giraffe Centre outside the Kenyan capital for the children, many of whom lost their parents to AIDS. New York Post, February 20, 1999
