Extractions: Introduction In order to help people better understand what it is like for an endangered animal; our class is going to publish a book of endangered animal stories. Since the animals can't write, it is your job to learn as much as you can about what the animal has gone through and persuade people to help. You will pretend that you are one member of that animal species. Try to explain what it was like living at the time when the animal first became threatened. Explain what is happening to you and your environment. Most importantly how does it feel to be in your situation? Pretend to use a "crystal ball" and look into the future of your species explaining what will happen to the number of your species by the end of the century.

Extractions: ELEPHANT Africa Unknown Throughout history, the elephant has played an important role in human economies, religion, and culture. The immense size, strength, and stature of this largest living land animal has intrigued people of many cultures for hundreds of years. In Asia, elephants have served as beasts of burden in war and peace. Some civilizations have regarded elephants as gods, and they have been symbols of royalty for some. Elephants have entertained us in circuses and festivals around the world. For centuries, the elephant's massive tusks have been prized for their ivory. The African elephant once roamed the entire continent of Africa, and the Asian elephant ranged from Syria to northern China and the islands of Indonesia. These abundant populations have been reduced to groups in scattered areas south of the Sahara and in isolated patches in India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. Demand for ivory, combined with habitat loss from human settlement, has led to a dramatic decline in elephant populations in the last few decades. In 1930, there were between 5 and 10 million African elephants. By 1979, there were 1.3 million. In 1989, when they were added to the international list of the most endangered species, there were about 600,000 remaining, less than one percent of their original number.

Extractions: This page is my small tribute to the grandeur of the wild creatures, great and small, that we share our planet with. The challenge is to ensure the survival of the natural world and its creatures while allowing mankind to flourish. We have to live together. I believe that we were granted the earth and all in it as a loan for safekeeping. I only hope that we will still have Nature's beauty to enjoy when we pass this world on to our children. It is a beautiful thing to see an animal free in its natural habitat. When we talk about freedom so often we compare it to things like an eagle flying free, without boundaries or limitations. There is that certain awe for the sheer beauty of it all-that incredibly fascinating and complex web of life woven around us.
Creative Technology Activities In Lafayette Parish So I just readapted a direct teach lesson that I previously wrote about endangered animals and put some technology components in it. http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/~cll1866/lplan.html
Extractions: in Lafayette Parish Overview: When I went to St. Pius and observed a second grade class, but I did not get the chance to see a lesson being taught. The day I went was the same day that STM's band was doing a concert for the entire school. I could not adapt a lesson or better yet rewrite a lesson I saw because I did not get the chance to see one. So I just readapted a direct teach lesson that I previously wrote about endangered animals and put some technology components in it. For a focus, the students will be put into groups of four. They will then be given a number of pictures with animals on them. Some of the pictures will have animals that the students are familiar with and some have will have animals that the students are not familiar with. They will then be asked to group them according to what animals they believe are endangered and what animals they believe are not endangered. The teacher will then discuss with the students which animals are endangered and which animals are not endangered. This activity will allow the students to get their mind thinking about what other animals might be endangered.

Extractions: Middle level and above If you are looking for a program to teach your students about endangered wildlife, the CD-ROM program Discovering Endangered Wildlife could fit your needs. Both educational and fun, the program includes excellent pictures, audio and video clips. The many active screen buttons add to this program's success. The game portion of the program requires the user to participate actively, giving the multimedia program its great strength. It provides information on our planet's endangered wildlife in two very distinctive ways, through either The Discovery Game or The Discovery Tour. The Discovery Game begins with a picture selection of an endangered animal. A screen of empty squares follows this selection. The player aims to bring life to this screen by uncovering the chosen endangered animal in its entirety. When clicking on a square, the user must solve different puzzles, crosswords, and respond to cues that are provided through very good pictures, videos, and narration. Each solution adds to your knowledge about this animal. Solving each puzzle adds a piece toward completing the picture.
