Extractions: We've both recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge but we still keep an eye on our human family and guide them when we can. It's a little harder doing this completely telepathicly... as any cat knows, there's nothing like the traditional swat-and-hiss to keep humans on the straight and narrow. And Bast knows they can use all the help they can get! They've just adopted two kittens, the offspring of a feral cat rescued by their friends at the Bide-A-Wee clinic. You can be sure we're watching them verrrry closely to make sure these kittens are raised right! And now we proudly present...

Extractions: Animal welfare is not a philosophy as such. It is a part of our culture, there are laws to protect animals, rules for the treatment of farm animals and many unwritten customs - all expressing the belief that animals should not be cruelly treated, and that people have a duty to look after them well. Many people who believe in animal welfare also believe that animals should be reared for food, killed if they are pests or be the quarry of sports such as fishing. There is no single definition of what is good or adequate animal welfare. What is animal rights?

Extractions: June 4, 2004 I receive calls and e-mails daily from people seeking help. Two that I received this week were especially troubling. Although they were different, the underlying cause was the same - lack of feeling for animals and the widespread belief that animals are just property. The first call concerned a badly abused 5-month old pup. A caring neighbor had taken him in. As she has limited resources she wanted to give him to a shelter where he could be adopted into a good home, but no one had any space. The shelter told her he would have to be immediately euthanized. She and her kids really wanted to keep him, but didn't know if he was sick or injured and what it might cost. We were able to help her have him checked out and the vet found nothing seriously wrong. This little guy's chances for a long life in a loving home look good. However, the person who abused him continues to abuse other animals. Although he has previously been convicted of animal abuse, he will not be prevented from owning animals. In fact, at this moment he currently has numerous cats and dogs. In the other case I received an e-mail from someone wanting to find a home for her 6 year old German shepherd because "I would like to find her a good home for the remainder of her life because I have limited space and I'd like to keep a new young female for breeding." She goes on to describe what a wonderful dog she is.

Extractions: Frequently Asked Questions Links to Animal Sites Care of Classroom Pets Animals are used in science for many purposes. We study animals to learn about the animals themselves, and to learn about ourselves. The results of these studies are better health and well-being for both humans and animals. We may study animals by observation, or through experimentation, using the Scientific Method . Animals are used as models of a disease to find out which drugs are safe and effective against a disease. They are also used as a model of normal reactions to substances that may be harmful if ingested or contacted, so that we can use consumer products safely. Finally, animals are used to teach budding scientists and doctors how the body works. Animals used for these purposes are treated humanely. Several Federal agencies have established guidelines for humane care and use, and institutions using animals have their own set of rules and regulations, all geared toward minimizing discomfort to the animals, and ensuring that alternatives to animals are used whenever possible. About Minnesota AALAS The Minnesota Branch of the American Association for laboratory Animal Science Inc. was established in 1965 as an organization of laboratory animal professionals, including researchers, veterinarians, veterinary technicians and animal care technicians.

Animal Welfare Vs. Animal Rights Some animal rights advocates have even suggested that animal welfare reforms actually impede progress toward animal rights because they improve the conditions http://www.furcommission.com/debate/
Extractions: For the last 50 years or more, the debate has been heating up over the role of animals in human society, with particular reference to the ways in which we use them for our benefit. Fueling the debate still further has been the emergence, particularly in the last 20 years, of a small but vociferous group of adherents to the philosophy of animal rights, which views humans and animals as essentially equal and condemns any and all use of animals for human benefit. Animal rights advocates do not distinguish between human beings and animals. In the words of Ingrid Newkirk, founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA), "There is no rational basis for saying that a human being has special rights. A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy. They're all mammals." Michael Fox of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has said, "The life of an ant and the life of my child should be accorded equal respect." Animal rights supporters reject all animal use, no matter how humane. Some animal rights advocates have even suggested that animal welfare reforms actually impede progress toward animal rights because they improve the conditions under which "animal exploitation" occurs, making it more difficult to stimulate public opposition to animal use. When the interests of humans and animals come in conflict, animal rights advocates put the animals first. PeTA's Newkirk has said, "Even if animal research produced a cure for AIDS, we'd be against it."

Extractions: Animal Welfare Program Yum! Brands, parent company of KFC, is committed to the humane treatment of animals. Yum! Brands is the owner of restaurant companies and, as such, does not own, raise, or transport animals. However, as a major purchaser of food products, we have the opportunity, and responsibility, to influence the way animals supplied to us are treated. We take that responsibility very seriously, and we are monitoring our suppliers on an ongoing basis to determine whether our suppliers are using humane procedures for caring for and handling animals they supply to us. As a consequence, it is our goal to only deal with suppliers who promise to maintain our high standards and share our commitment to animal welfare. To assist us in that effort, Yum! Brands formed the Yum! Brands Animal Welfare Advisory Council, which consists of highly regarded experts in the field. The Council provides us with information and advice based on relevant data and scientific research. The Animal Welfare Advisory Council has been a key factor in formulating Yum! Brands' animal welfare program.
