(Canada and the United States, as well as many countries in Europe, have no quarantine requirements for dogs and cats. The UK of course does.) Extractions: Joeri and his best friend, Houdini Samos Shelter Appeal When Joeri arrived on Samos just before Christmas, 2002 he was shocked by the conditions at the municipal shelter. Like most municipal shelters, this one is also located next to a rubbish dump, in the hills above Samos town ... out of sight, out of mind. There is no electricity or running water. To say the conditions were basic would be an understatement! Approximately 50 dogs were locked up in 13 cages, measuring just 4m x 2m, and a small inside compartment ... the dogs were slowly going 'cage crazy' in their tiny prisons. Most were terribly malnourished, their ribs protruding and they were terrified of people. There was no sparkle in their eyes - only fear. There was nothing for them to do but wait for death to release them from their miserable existence, after which their bodies would be thrown in a mass grave, which we also saw. We soon realized these dogs were not dying from sickness but from starvation and neglect. The Greek 'caretaker' who was employed by the Samos municipality to take care of the dogs often didn't go there for 2-3 days on end so the dogs would go without food and water. We were terribly shocked and decided to take over the tasks of caring for these dogs.
