Anemia is a condition where there is an abnormally low number of RBC (red blood cells - the cells responsible for transporting oxygen round the body) and/or a deficiency in hemoglobin (the pigment inside RBC that oxygen binds to). RBC are produced in the bone marrow and circulate in the blood for about 120 days in cats and dogs before they are destroyed again in the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. What causes Anemia? In simple terms there are three basic causes of anemia: blood loss due to hemorrhage (bleeding), accelerated destruction of RBC in the body, or decreased production of RBC by the bone marrow. The symptoms include severe aplastic anemia , hypoplasia of the bone marrow, and patchy discoloration of the skin. This is an autosomal recessive condition, affected children usually develop severe aplastic anemia by age 8 to 9 years. Treatment usually consists of bone marrow transplant. Fanconi Anaemia is not a cancer, though recent research has shown an association between Fanconi Anaemia and leukaemia. There are 8 types of Fanconi Anaemia; known as complementation groups A through to H. Some definitions: Anemia below normal levels of erythrocytes (red blood cells) Aplastic anemia anemia that is resistant to treatment; often accompanied by deficiencies of other blood cells. Hypoplasia incomplete / under development of a part of the body. Pancytopenia deficiency of all types of blood cells. Recessive (genetics) if the required allele (a type of gene) is not present in both members of a pair of chromosomes then that allele is not expressed.

The iron component, hemoglobin, and hematocrit are also measured in a CBC. The hematocrit is the percentage by volume of RBCs in the blood and can indicate possible anemia. From the blood smear portion of a CBC, RBC morphology can be evaluated for cell color, size, and shape. Vitamin B12 deficiencies may result in neurologic symptoms such as impaired touch perception and decreased reflexes. More serious conditions due to low vitamin B12 levels may include psychological symptoms such as memory loss, disorientation, and depression. These conditions may be seen either with or without macrocytic changes in the blood cells.

Iron enters the developing red blood cell (erythroblasts); here iron accumulates in the mitochondria giving a ringed appearance to the nucleus (ringed sideroblast). The mitochondria are overloaded with iron and hemoglobin production (heme synthesis) is defective. Sideroblasts are visible with Prussian blue staining and observable under microscopic examination of bone marrow. Because these ringed sideroblasts can develop poorly or not at all into mature red cells, anemia is the consequence. Sideroblastic anemia (SA) is a complicated disorder and therefore difficult to treat. . Often SA acts like iron deficiency anemia (IDA), but unlike IDA, iron tests are normal or increased with SA. Three categories of sideroblastic anemia are: hereditary, acquired or idiopathic. Hereditary Sideroblastic Anemia is due to a genetic defect; the gene is an X-linked recessive (not dominant) gene. It may manifest in both men and women but is seen more commonly in young males, maternal uncles and cousins. Hereditary sideroblastic anemia generally manifests during the first three decades of life especially during adolescence but it has been diagnosed in patients over seventy.

In December 2000 and January 2001 we were both diagnosed with a rare, life threatening blood disease called Fanconi anemia. It causes bone marrow failure; our bodies cannot make the blood we need to survive. Our only hope is a bone marrow transplant. Alex has found a perfect match and is recovering from her May 31, 2001 transplant in Cincinnati, Ohio. There is no perfect match for Matthew, in any registry throughout the entire world. Extractions: We, again would like to thank everyone for their sincere and heartfelt support. We literally could not have come as far as we did without all of you. We regretfully inform you all that Adam passed away at 9:11 PM, Minnesota time, on February 27, 1997. He was peaceful and pain-free when he passed. His family was with him, as was most of the staff from 4A, who have care for him in the entire duration of our stay here.
