AllUniversità di Cagliari, per la precisione al dipartimento di Scienze Biomediche e Biotecnologie e al Centro Trapianti Midollo Osseo 2° Clinica Pediatrica, sono state sfruttate in modo innovativo metodiche mature come il prelievo dei villi coriali e la tipizzazione dellHLA. Il primo test serve a determinare, prelevando cellule fetali, se il nascituro è semplicemente portatore di mutazioni genetiche e, in questo caso della talassemia, cioè se è eterozigote per i geni incriminati, oppure se ne soffrirà inevitabilmente (omozigote per i geni della malattia). La determinazione dellHLA (o complesso maggiore di istocompatibilità) serve invece a stabilire la compatibilità tra persone in caso di trapianto di midollo come di altri organi o tessuti. Lidea che ha guidato i ricercatori era fornire unalternativa allinterruzione di gravidanza alle coppie che, in seguito a consulenza genetica, avessero appreso di attendere un figlio omozigote per la malattia. Infatti, se la coppia aveva già avuto un figlio sano, con HLA identico a quello fetale, era già possibile ipotizzare il trapianto delle cellule ematopoietiche al raggiungimento del diciottesimo mese di vita. Daltra parte anche nel caso opposto, e cioè che il nascituro risulti esente dalla malattia ma la coppia abbia già avuto un figlio colpito dalla malattia, se esiste una compatibilità con il feto cè non solo la conferma di poter procedere in futuro al trapianto di midollo, ma anche a quello di cellule staminali da cordone ombelicale. E utile conoscere in anticipo questo aspetto anche perché purtroppo la conservazione del sangue da cordone ombelicale non è una pratica corrente, anche se si tratta di una risorsa molto preziosa.

But a new film documentary may help to educate viewers about the disease, which affects about 80,000 people in the United States and millions worldwide. Called "Sickle Cell: The Forgotten Disease," the film will air at 10 p.m. EST on the Discovery Health Channel. It is being co-produced by the Dr. Spock Company. "It's hard to get funding or people interested in trials," said Dr. James Eckman, director of the Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Grady Health System. "But because this is a lifelong, chronic problem, it has a greater impact." CONDITION CLINIC Sickle Cell disease A genetic disorder, sickle cell disease attacks red blood cells, making them rigid and distorting their normally round shape into crescents and points. These misshapen cells can easily clog tiny blood vessels and deprive organs and tissues of vital oxygen, causing intractable pain crises. In addition, children with sickle cell are more prone to stroke, pneumonia, infection and other long-term complications.

Extractions: Aplastic anemia is not a single disease, but a group of closely related disorders characterized by the failure of the bone marrow to produce all three types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Aplastic anemia is rare, affecting fewer than 1,000 people each year in the United States. The exact cause of aplastic anemia is unknown, although it has been linked to exposure to chemicals and radiation. It is also believed that some cases of aplastic anemia are inherited and that some cases are due to a viral infection. Symptoms/Diagnosis In aplastic anemia, the quantity of each of the three blood cell types is much lower than normal, which leads to the symptoms that cause a physician to suspect the disease. These symptoms are unexplained infections (due to fewer white blood cells), unexpected bleeding (due to fewer platelets) and fatigue (due to fewer red blood cells).
