A prosoma or cephalothorax (composed of the fused head and thorax) and the abdomen (the rear body). A narrow waist (pedicel) connects both parts. The upper side of the spider is called the dorsal side (i.e. the back) and the bottom the ventral side (i.e. the belly). The cephalothorax at the dorsal side is made of chitin what is called the carapax . The eyes are located in the front. Most spiders have eight eyes, some 6. But there are spiders with no eyes, 2, 4 and up to even 12 eyes. The eyes are singular and are called ocelli , unlike the insects that have compound eyes. The main pair of eyes is always the middle pair and has a different construction than the other eyes. The light sensitive cells point towards the incoming light and is therefore referred to as indirect retina. Except the crab spiders and jumping spiders, the main eyes are small or even absent in spiders with six eyes. The construction is similar to as in humans and these eyes have a high resolution. In the other eyes the light sensitive points away from the light and have an indirect retina. These secondary eyes give the spider a much broader field of vision than the main eyes and are used to give them the ability to judge distance. During hunting, these secondary eyes catch the movement of the prey and the main eyes are used to focus as it moves closer to the prey.

However, the road to financial ruin is littered with failed horse studs and at times hundreds of beautiful, worthy but unwanted horses are processed through the various horse abattoirs due to oversupply and lack of any other market for them. To compound the issue, slaughter conditions for the horse meat trade can be far from ideal. Groups such as Equine Advocates Inc have done much to increase awareness worldwide of the cruelty associated with the horse slaughter industry. A contributor to the oversupply problem is the crossing of inferior horses in the hope of producing something better than the parents. It happens, in fact has even produced champions, but not often. Putting an inferior mare to a top quality stallion in the hope that he will “improve” her is also usually a no-win situation, because even if the stallion contributes his best genes to the offspring, fifty percent still come from the mare and that is an indisputable scientific fact. “Breed the best to the best and hope for the best” is a very apt truism when it comes to breeding horses. No one can dictate whether a particular mare should be bred from or not, but selling the offspring at a loss or not being able to sell it at all becomes a great leveler if breeding for the commercial market. It costs no more to rear a good horse than a bad. Stallions in particular need special selection because they can sire many foals in a season. Again no one can dictate whether a particular stallion is good enough to stand at stud, but the proof will be in the offspring. Stallions at public stud should not only have near-faultless conformation and be free of inherited defects, but they should have some feature of performance or pedigree that is above average if not exceptional. Service fees should be in keeping with these attributes; it often pays to shop around when looking for a stallion to put your mare to, because some service fees are grossly over-inflated.

Technically, circumcision is the surgical removal of the skin that normally covers and protects the head, or glans , of the penis. At birth, the penis is covered with a continuous layer of skin extending from the pubis to the tip of the penis where the foreskin (prepuce) folds inward upon itself, creating a double protective layer of skin over the glans penis. The inner lining of the prepuce is mucous membrane and serves to keep the surface of the glans penis (also mucous membrane) soft, moist, and sensitive. The prepuce is often erroneously referred to as ``redundant'' tissue, which allows the medical community and society-at-large to consider the foreskin an optional part of the male sex organ and, therefore, to condone its routine removal in a variety of procedures collectively known as ``circumcision.'' Circumcision, however, was also a part of religious ritual, including Judaism and Islam as well as others. However, 85 percent of the world's male population is not circumcised. Circumcision in 1992 was still the most commonly performed surgical procedure in America, where 59 percent of newborn males underwent this operation. Circumcision reached its peak of 85 to 90 percent during the 1960s and 1970s. The surgery, usually performed on baby boys within the first few days of life, is often considered "routine."      Extractions: Injuries involving some type of blow to the head are among the most common in our society. Some 700,000 people in North America suffer traumatic head injuries each year, and between 70,000 and 90,000 are left permanently disabled. Head injuries can range from relatively minor damage to the scalp and face such as lacerations, abrasions and bruising to more serious consequences involving damage to the brain. While traumatic brain injury occurs much less frequently, it is important to know how it is identified and what to do for the person. Loss of consciousness, even for a very brief period, is one of the clearest indications that the brain may have been affected by a blow to the head. A confusional state involving uncertainty about time, date, and location and/or a period of memory loss for the events surrounding the head injury are also indicators of trauma to the brain. Any of these symptoms following a blow to the head should be taken seriously. With the most severe symptoms, loss of consciousness for more than a few minutes, the person should receive immediate medical attention. With less severe symptoms the person should be watched for a period of several hours after the head trauma. The person's state of consciousness, orientation to time and place and immediate memory function (e.g., remembering a series of four numbers) should be evaluated periodically during this time. Any evidence of deterioration may be a sign of the delayed effects of brain injury due to swelling or internal bleeding and require that the person receive medical attention as soon as possible. Some appreciation for how and why these symptoms arise will provide insight into why even a seemingly mild blow to the head may have very serious and potentially life-threatening consequences.

     Extractions: Many practitioners and institutions routinely and successfully employ local anesthesia for inguinal hernia repairs. Although there are certainly other options (including general anesthesia and regionl anesthesia such as spinal or epidural), local offers some unique advantages to the patient. As such, here is a short summary about the use of local for these operations including a discusssion of advantages and disadvantages. Obviously, the choice of anesthesia will be influenced by patient preferences and needs. In addition, to complete any operation successfully under local anesthesia requires a surgeon who is comfortable with the technique and willing to stop surgery and place additional local anesthesia should this become necessary. Interestingly with inguinal hernia repair it is rarely, if ever, necessary to supplement with additional injections once the initial infiltration is complete. Reported experiences with it have been uniformly positive. Advantages of Local Anesthesia Minimal physiological disturbance which may be an advantage in the patient in whom you wish to avoid a general anesthetic and in whom a regional technique may be contraindicated. This could include patient's with serious cardiac or respiratory diseases which could tolerate other types of anesthesia but would be at reduced risk if given only local anesthesia.
