Extractions: Monuments and Memorials Nurses Memorial Against a background of evergreens, the heroic size white marble figure looks out upon the Army, Navy and Air Force nurses who so valiantly earned their right to lie at Arlington. The granite statue of a nurse in uniform, sculptured by Frances Rich, honors the nurses who served in the U.S. armed forces in World War I, many of whom rest among the hundreds of nurses buried in Section 21 also called the "Nurses Section." On July 13, 1970, Navy Capt. Delores Cornelius , deputy director of the Navy Nurse Corps, requested authority to install a bronze plaque over the existing inscription on the Nurses Monument. The inscription at that time simply read "Army and Navy Nurses." Authority was granted Nov. 20, 1970, to place a 12-inch-by-18-inch bronze plaque over the carved inscription. The inscription, in raised letters, on the plaque reads: THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED IN 1938

Extractions: From the LA Times, 6/6/04: To justify increasing defense spending while slashing taxes, Reagan had embraced supply-side economicsa theory that enjoyed little standing among many economists. Supply-siders held that higher spending and lower taxes would not increase the deficit. Instead, the theory held, tax cuts would unleash such a wave of economic growth that government income would actually rise. It did not happen. As defense spending rose and the tax cuts kicked in, the predicted surge in economic growth did not materialize. The deficit soared toward record levels. Eventually, the national debt nearly tripled. Before Reagan's first year was up, the nation's economy plunged into the worst downturn in years. By March of 1982, Reagan, who had acknowledged "a slight and, I hope, a short recession," was reduced to denying that the nation was in a depression. Unemployment reached a 41-year record of 10.8% that November, and the global effects of the slowdown did severe damage to Third World debtor nations and the world's banking system. It is intended both to highlight the significance of stereoscopic photographs as a distinct popular medium that contributed to domestic debates about imperialism and to provide access to a diverse sample of stereoscopic images for those interested in pursuing further studies. In addition to more than 400 images housed at this site, it provides links to about 100 stereoviews of the wars and the presidents most closely associated with imperialism that are available elsewhere on the Web. BUFFALO SOLDIERS & INDIAN WARS Sixteen photographs of Buffalo Soldiers, 14 of their legendary Native american foes, two minivideos and 24 story/page links are displayed. Buffalo Soldier battles, skirmishes and background events are given. http://www.buffalosoldier.net/
Extractions: As a Buffalo Soldier, great-grandfather, Sergeant Henry Parker, and the U.S. army were a part of the Plains Indian's nightmare. As an American soldier, he served his country under the worst of conditions, showing the courage and bravery that has been the tradition of all fighting men, no matter their cause, no matter their sacrifice. It should be noted, that Regimental returns show that the Buffalo Soldiers were not involved in Indian massacres, though they were camped near the sites of two incidents and assisted those who survived. It is this author's stated belief, that the Buffalo Soldiers did not mistreat Native-Americans and were not responsible for their removal from reservations. After escaping from his slavemaster in Apton Valley, Kentucky, great-grandfather joined the 101st Regiment United States Colored Infantry, at 18 years of age. He served three years as a private in the Civil War. Action was seen at White's Ranch, Boyd's Station and Stevenson's Gap, and at Scottsborough and Larkinsville, Alabama. Henry Parker enlisted in the U.S. Cavalry on May 18, 1867 in Memphis, Tennessee by Captain Davis for a period of five years. He was 21 years old and listed his occupation as a groom. His description included black eyes, black hair and a complexion listed as mulatto. Henry's height was recorded as 5'9 1/2". He was assigned to Company D of the Tenth U.S. Cavalry and was discharged on May 18, 1872 at Ft. Sill, Indian Territory * as a private.

Extractions: Exasperated by abuse heaped on Democrats from Northern church pulpits during the Civil War, Democratic editor (and local Methodist minister) Ira Norris protested from the columns of his newspaper in the spring of 1863: "Democrats have as good a right to pray and share the blessings of grace as any beings on this green earth."(1) This proved difficult, however. At the 1862 annual conference held in Pike County in September (the day after the Battle of Antietam and four days before Lincoln announced the preliminary emancipation proclamation) conference members enthusiastically proposed "some red hot resolutions in support of the Lincoln administration," and Flack felt it his "modest duty" to "oppose any commitment of the church to the probable policy of any president or party." He spoke out. But opposing "the mad career of a company of politically enthused preachers," he said, was like "pitching straws against the wind." He made up his mind "over again" to "keep my mouth shut" and to "go along preaching and working for souls, hoping to avoid any trouble."(7)

But the key to success was what we didnât see: Special Forces, psyop, the air warâand the utterly inept Iraqi Army By Evan Thomas and Martha Brant Newsweek April 21 issue - Know thine enemy is a cardinal rule of war. Ignorance was costly for American soldiers fighting guerrillas in Vietnam. Before plunging into Iraq, U.S. psychological-warfare operators studied certain cultural stereotypes. advertisement One was that young Arab toughs cannot tolerate insults to their manhood. So, as American armored columns pushed down the road to Baghdad, 400-watt loudspeakers mounted on Humvees would, from time to time, blare out in Arabic that Iraqi men are impotent. The Fedayeen, the fierce but undisciplined and untrained Iraqi irregulars, could not bear to be taunted. Whether they took the bait or saw an opportunity to attack, many Iraqis stormed out of their concealed or dug-in positions, pushing aside their human shields in some casesâto be slaughtered by American tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles. âWhat you say is many times more important than what you do in this part of the world,â says a senior U.S. psy-warrior. American armed forces have long tried to overwhelm the enemy. Outsmarting them is a relatively new idea. âWeâre going to mess with their heads,â a senior Pentagon official told NEWSWEEK before the war began. But even the most gung-ho Bush administration officials were surprised by the suddenness of Saddamâs fall. So were the commanders on the ground. Inside a drab, dun-colored tent within a drab, dun-colored warehouse at Central Command headquarters in Doha, Qatar, resides the âbrainâ of the American war machine, the Joint Operations Center, the âJOC.â The tent (surrounded by barbed wire) is stuffed full of high-tech equipment, computers and giant plasma screens that show the battlefield in real time. The commanders in the JOC kept waiting for the battle that never came.

Korean War US POW's In Soviet Jails A news story on american prisoners of wars captured during the Korean War and sent to Soviet prisons and labor camps. http://www.kimsoft.com/korea/mia-russ.htm
Extractions: July 19, 1996, The New York Times Khabarovsk, Russia Time has stooped Vladimir Trotsenko's shoulders, but his memories are as clear as his cobalt blue eyes: the American flyer, his right arm in a new cast, in a Soviet military hospital ward. The American, he recalled, would slowly re peat, "America San Francisco, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Chicago." Curious, Trotsenko, a paratrooper recovering from a knee injury, would hobble down the third-floor hospital corridor to gaze at the four imprisoned Americans. The airman with the broken arm would point to a crewman in a body cast and would make cradling m otions with his arms, indicating that the man had left two small children back home. The year was 1951, and the place was Military Hospital 404 in Novosysoyevka, 300 miles south of here. Stalin was in his last years, the Korean War was raging, and the Cold War with the United States was on. "I did not talk about this for 43 years," Trotsenko, spry at 68, said as his wife, Nina, served blini and borscht at their wooden dacha outside this city, the largest industrial center of Russia's Far East. In 1994, he noticed a small advertisement in a local newspaper placed by a new group, a Russian-American commission on prisoners of war. Admitting that he was "tortured" about whether "to call or not to call," he finally did.
