While his pronouncement was not much of a surprise, many were taken aback by Gore's repeated attacks on President Clinton 's character, apparently attempts to distance himself from the scandalous president. He also tried to perk up his lackluster speaking style, though only the volume of his voice was affected. ERNEST EDWARD SANFORD Click for larger image After struggling for four years to pass the eye examination, Ernie finally could not make it in first class year, and although graduating with the class, he was not commissioned because of being an eye 'unsat'. He returned to civilian life and joined the Bendix Corp., Teterboro, NJ, working for another USNA Alumnus, Pat Moran '35. Ernie was later transferred to another Bendix facility in Philadelphia, PA. After a period at that location and during WW II, he was commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve and reported to USS YORKTOWN. At the end of the war, he was married to Belie Muir in Seattle, WA. He then rejoined the Bendix Corp. for a short time, after which he was employed by the Applied Physics Laboratory, Silver Spring, MD, and Vitro Laboratories, also in Silver Spring. In 1956, he was transferred to Vitro's New York operation, and moved to Oradell, NJ. Since commuting to New York was not his 'cup of tea', he accepted a position with the Kearfott Company, Little Falls, NJ, as Program Manager of various defense programs. One such program led to a 3-year assignment, commencing in 1977, in Norway at a large Norwegian defense contractor facility. He regards this period as one of several highlights in his business life.
