Don't hesitate to ask a reference librarian for assistance. African-American history is a rich field with a wealth of material to draw upon. Sources in history are usually considered primary, secondary, or tertiary. Primary records are as unfiltered as possible. Diaries, letters, newspaper or magazine accounts written at the time of the events described, and personal narratives of things the narrator saw or experienced are generally considered primary. Secondary documents are based on primary sources. Professional historians often write secondary documents. If you write a paper based on primary sources, you will have written a secondary document. Tertiary sources are mostly based on secondary sourcespopular histories are usually tertiary. Unless you live near a library with a special emphasis on African-American history, most of the sources available will be secondary and tertiary. In the average library, primary sources, if any, will consist of newspapers, older journal runs, and first or early editions of primary monographs. Such sources may be in print or microformat. Secondary and tertiary sources consist mainly of professional history journals, popular magazines, and books. This guide lists some of these resources, but is not exhaustive. Extractions: Revolutionary War to Civil War ... Twentieth Century At the time of the first European contact, North Carolina was inhabited by a number of native tribes Since most historical accounts of travelers and settlers dealt with either the Cherokee or the Algonquian, little is known about the Siouan peoples and their pre-contact cultures. The descriptions which follow will deal with the Cherokee as representative of the Iroquoian, with the Catawba as representative of the Siouan-speakers and the piedmont tribes, and the coastal Algonquian. Coastal Algonquian At the time of the first contact of Europeans with the Indians, the Algonquian tribes occupied the tidewater areas of the Atlantic Coast extending from Canada to as far south as the Neuse River in North Carolina. In 1584, the estimated 7,000 Algonquians living in North Carolina were relative newcomers to the Southeast, having come in a series of migrations. To some extent, they retained cultural elements from their Northeastern Algonquian traditions, but there was also a great deal of cultural borrowing from their southern neighbors as they adapted to the geographical and climatic conditions of the area, in that they were more water-oriented and placed more emphasis upon hunting, fishing, and gathering than did most of their neighbors. Catawba The Catawba was one of the Siouan-speaking tribes of the piedmont area of the Carolinas at the time of the first European contact. Little is known of their culture and life style at that time, since contact was few and sporadic and little was documented of their culture. What is known, is based largely on the writings of John Lawson, who explored the piedmont territory and visited the Catawba in 1701.

Of the 50,000 inhabitants, half were slaves, and almost all of it's citizens were clustered near the coast. As events to the north began to lead to war with Britain, Georgia, for the most part, continued with business as usual. When the colonial representatives began convening The Continental Congress, Georgia reluctantly sent delegates. In 1776, this Congress signed the Declaration of Independence. The Georgians that signed this document were: Button Gwinnett Lyman Hall George Walton The early years of the American Revolution were quiet in Georgia. Historyincluding African-American historyis a living, continuing story, and some of the most significant achievements in our history took place during your lifetime, in just the last 20 years or so. Some of these achievements are recent enough that you have witnessed them yourself, and someday you will recount them to your own children and grandchildren in stories that begin, "I remember when . . . . " The 10 African Americans profiled below will be remembered as pioneers in their fieldsbusiness, government, journalism, literature, medicine, religion, science and technology, the militarybut their legacy goes far beyond their titles of "first." As one of them remarked, "There may be significance in being the first, but there is more significance in being the second, third, fourth, and fifth." It is their commitment to make the way better for those that follow, to leave behind something that lasts longer than their own spotlight, that sets these trailblazers apart.
