Leonard F. Guttridge, Ghosts of Cape Sabine: The Harrowing True Story of the Greely Expedition Powered by InkNoise Roberta Martin was one of the creators of modern gospel music. Her group, the Roberta Martin Singers, was one of the most popular gospel groups of the 1950s and the first to mix male and female singers. Martin was born in 1907 in Helena, Arizona. Her family moved to Chicago, Illinois when she was ten years old and it was there that she got her start in gospel music. Martin took piano lessons from an aunt and began accompanying church choirs while she was still in high school. After graduation, she attended Northwestern University, where she studied to become a concert pianist. The Roberta Martin Singers toured across the United States and Europe in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. They recorded more than 100 compositions. Martin also published gospel music through her own publishing company started in 1939.

Extractions: I'll admit, I was never a huge fan of modern South African pop, particularly the slick, upbeat mbaqanga pop, or the choral music that was all the rage in the "world music" scene in the mid-'80s... I always thought, yeah, it's powerful and dynamic... but kinda boring. Imagine my delight, then, when I came across the "jazz" and "jive" music of the 1940s, '50s and '60s, with its delirious collision of ska-like African rhythms and American-style swing and rock melodies. It's some of the greatest music I've ever heard. Completely irresistible, although a little hard to track down. Here are recommendations from what I've heard so far. This isn't really the kind of South African "jive" I'm talking about here, although it is the bridge between the classic style and the more widely known township styles of the Mahotella Queens and other groups who came to our outside attention in the 1980s. I prefer the older style, but if you like more modern South African pop, this is a really nice disc, and is surprisingly modern, considering that these recordings date back to the early 1960s. A young Malathini plays on several of the tracks. (Note: this CD is frequently mistaken for a compilation, in fact it is material by two different bands, mainly by the Dark City Sisters, which was the more famous of the two groups.)

Wild and winding, Route 66 was a 2,400-mile roadway that began in Chicago. It snaked westward through eight states and across three time zones before dead-ending into Santa Monica, California. Officially opened in 1924, then finally bypassed in 1984, old Route 66 seems to have been so much more than just a road. It was a bonafide part of American history. The road may have played just as important a role in settling the west during the modern era as the Oregon Trail did in the 1800s. Arizona Crossroads: Along Old Route 66, had to be more historical. Extractions: The first American comic book, Funnies on Parade , was a giveaway anthology reprinting comic strips from the newspapers. Wanting to get rid of undistributed copies, the story goes, someone slapped a 10 cent tag on them and dropped them off at a few newsstands. They sold out in a flash and so, in 1934, the comics industry was born. At first comics pages were filled with reprints of syndicated comic strips from the newspapers. Within a few years, though, these were replaced by original content. It was cheaper for the publishers to purchase new material from aspiring cartoonists, suffering from the effects of the Depression and desperate for any kind of work, than to buy reprint rights from the syndicates. Many early comic-book creators had no love for the medium. The pay was meager, the work grueling and usually uncredited. They worked in comic books in the hope that one day they'd "make it" and "graduate" to newspaper comic strips. Ironically, the first big comic-book hit was a feature that had been turned down for years by the comic-strip syndicates: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's Superman Cartoonists often worked for studios that mass-produced and packaged stories and titles for the publishers. Whether it's swaying with the choirs or tappin' along with the quartets or simply raising hands to the rhythm of soul-stirring crooners, gospel is one genre of music that needs to be both seen and heard. Once narrowly defined as religious, gospel has transcended those limits to become a profound force in American music and popular culture. Fueled by major recording companies, it has leaped over its traditional religious walls and is now more than just church music. Last year's phenomenon of Kirk Franklin's Why We Sing (it went platinum) and the current success of William Becton's Be Encouraged (a mainstay on Billboard's gospel chart for 28 weeks and counting at press time) attest to gospel's growing popularity. According to materials received from Gospel Today magazine, within the last five years, seven major recording companies have created and staffed gospel divisions; independent gospel labels increased 50 percent, and total revenues for gospel music have nearly tripled in the past decade-from $180 million in 1980 to $500 million in 1990.

It was a beautifully outlandish, opulent, grandiose monument to the heady excesses of the pre-crash 1920's, a mosque-like structure complete with minarets, onion domes, and an interior decor which was even more lavish than its facade. The decades which followed brought the Fox through many ups and downs: bankruptcy in the Great Dep ression, a heyday as a premier movie theater in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, gradual decline as the film culture moved towards smaller venues than the 4,000 seat Fox during the 70s; then a period of restoration and preservation under designation as a historic landmark, that continues through today. Extractions: 'Spellbound by Romance' This show is bound for glory By John K. Ryan Any novice looking to learn about American folk music would do well to use as a primer the music of Leadbelly, Josh White and Woody Guthrie. These three legends, whose careers intersected starting in the 1940s, were a major inspiration for the burgeoning folk scene that took off in the '50s and '60s. Saturday night at 8 p.m. at the Centre East Theatre in the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, three current folk singers, who saw the legends as mentors will honor them in the tribute show "Glory Bound!." The production will bring together Odetta, Oscar Brand and Josh White Jr. to perform songs from each of the legends. The tribute also will include discussion and film clips to celebrate the history and evolution of folk music. The three artists being honored came to know each other through social protest rallies they attended and performed at in the 1940s. According to Doug Yeager, who conceived and produces "Glory Bound!," the three folk singers even went on the road together during that era.

Older viewers were prone to stay at home and watch television. In the period following WWII when most of the films were idealized with conventional portrayals of men and women, young people wanted new and exciting symbols of rebellion. Hollywood responded to audience demands - the late 1940s and 1950s saw the rise of the anti-hero - with stars like newcomers James Dean, Paul Newman and Marlon Brando. Sexy anti-heroines included Ava Gardner, Kim Novak, and Marilyn Monroe - an exciting, vibrant, sexy star.
