Extractions: Web Site. Some terms defy definition. "Sustainable agriculture" has become one of them. In such a quickly changing world, can anything be sustainable? What do we want to sustain? How can we implement such a nebulous goal? Is it too late? With the contradictions and questions have come a hard look at our present food production system and thoughtful evaluations of its future. If nothing else, the term "sustainable agriculture" has provided "talking points," a sense of direction, and an urgency, that has sparked much excitement and innovative thinking in the agricultural world. The word "sustain," from the Latin sustinere (sus-, from below and tenere, to hold), to keep in existence or maintain, implies long-term support or permanence. As it pertains to agriculture, sustainable describes farming systems that are "capable of maintaining their productivity and usefulness to society indefinitely. Such systems... must be resource-conserving, socially supportive, commercially competitive, and environmentally sound." [John Ikerd, as quoted by Richard Duesterhaus in "Sustainability's Promise," Journal of Soil and Water Conservation (Jan.-Feb. 1990) 45(1): p.4. NAL Call # 56.8 J822]

Extractions: Topics in Sustainable Agriculture Index: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture Statement of Purpose: Needs of Sustainable Agriculture: The Promise of Sustainable Agriculture: ... Links: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture There is a battle waging within agriculture today, a battle that is pitting large segments of agribusiness against the sustainable agriculture movement. Opponents of sustainable agriculture control much of the media and therefore their opinions dominate the debate and the minds of the masses. They assert that if farmers stop using chemicals (that they just happen to produce) the world would starve. They cite biased economic studies, such as the one conducted by Thomas Foster (an agricultural economist for the Tennessee Valley Authority and the National Fertilizer Development Center) in which he claims "Taking chemicals out of agriculture could mean cutting exports in half, 217,000 fewer jobs, rampant inflation, and a huge increase in food costs. . . Yields generally fell in all scenarios while costs per unit of crop increased in all cases." ( Omaha World-Herald 15 November 1990, 19). This type of economic study (even if totally correct) is extremely irresponsible. It is obvious that the conversion away from chemically based agriculture "is a slow, methodical, step-at-a-time procedure"(p.94

Ific.org : Agriculture & Food Production alternative agriculture. For all of these reasons, many farmers have adopted alternativeagriculture techniques to reduce the risks related to chemicals. http://www.ific.org/food/agriculture/index.cfm
Extractions: Agriculture in the United States is becoming more productive. In 1935, there were 6.8 million farms in the United States, and the average farmer produced enough food to feed 20 people. In 2002, the number of farms was estimated to be 2.16 million, and the average U.S. farmer produced enough food each year to feed more than 100 people. In addition to providing an abundant food supply for domestic markets, crops from nearly one-third of U.S. farm acreage are exported to overseas customers. Consumers have benefited from American food production capabilities. The percentage of income Americans spend on food has dropped by 50 percent since the early 1900s. Statistics for the year 2000 show that Americans are spending 10.6 percent of their disposable income on all food consumed both at home and away from home. This figure has dropped dramatically over the years, from a high of 25.3 percent in 1933, 20.5 percent in 1950, and 15.1 percent in 1965. Farming practices have changed dramatically over the years. The result is a larger, less expensive, more diverse, and safer food supply. But no other profession or way of life has greater sentimental appeal to the American public than farming. While much of that appeal is well deserved and still appropriate, public perceptions of farming simply have not kept pace with realities. This may not matter until a food issue focuses their attention on farming practices and leaves them shocked to learn that a modern farm differs significantly from the storybook image of childhood.
