Extractions: These calls are heartbreaking. It's true that the easiest allergy treatment is to remove the triggering agent. But this ignores the importance of companion animals to our health and well being. Our fosterers' experiences show that allergy sufferers can live safely and happily with rabbits and other pets. Allergies are part of the body's normal response to fighting infections. Sometimes the immune system becomes hyperstimulated and reacts to agents that normally are ignored. Common allergens include dust mites, cockroaches, and plant pollens. Allergies to animals are often caused by the saliva proteins left on the fur after licking and not the fur itself. Touching the fur transfers these proteins to our fingertips, and then to the face, eyes and nose. In turn, these entrances into our body are lined with immune cells ready to respond to any invaders. For some people the proteins on rabbit fur are considered dangerous invaders, prompting the immune system to mount a full scale defense. Watery eyes and dripping nose try to wash away these proteins. The airway constricts in response to hormones such as histamines, which recruit more immune cells to the invasion site. This response is beneficial when the invader is influenza. A response to rabbits or other companion animals can instead cause misery and trouble. For several of our fos-terers, the inconvenience of allergies is far outweighed by love for our companions. Discussed here are strategies that HRS fosterers successfully use to minimize these discomforts.

Unfortunately, houses and apartment buildings harbor their own allergens. The inside of your home actually traps allergens, making them impossible to avoid. While almost anything in your environment can trigger an allergic reaction , house dust is the main culprit in indoor allergies. What is house dust? It varies depending on the type and age of your home, the temperature and humidity in the home, what you keep in the home (everything from food to clothes to furniture), and who lives in the home (human, animal, and plant).

Extractions: Print friendly Tell a friend Find subscription deals Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine by Belinda Rowland Allergies are abnormal reactions of the immune system which occur in response to otherwise harmless substances. Allergies are among the most common of medical disorders. It is estimated that 60 million Americans, or more than one in every five people, suffer from some form of allergy, with similar proportions throughout much of the rest of the world. Allergy is the single largest reason for school absence and is a major source of lost productivity in the workplace. An allergy is a type of immune reaction. Normally, the immune system responds to foreign bodies, like pollen or bacteria, by producing specific proteins called antibodies that are capable of binding to identifying molecules (antigens) on the foreign body. This reaction between antibody and antigen sets off a series of reactions designed to protect the body from infection. Sometimes, this same series of reactions is triggered by harmless, everyday substances. This is the condition known as allergy, and the offending substance is called an allergen. Allergens enter the body through four main routes: the airways, the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and the circulatory system.

A study published in this week's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that, contrary to many parents' fears, owning cats or dogs does not increase a child's risk of developing allergies, and in fact, may actually protect them. The study's lead author, Dr. Dennis Ownby of the Medical College of Georgia, says that even he was "very surprised" by the results. Ownby and colleagues followed more than 470 children from birth to age 6 or 7, comparing those exposed to cats and dogs during their first year of life to those who were not. By using skin-prick tests for detecting common allergies, the researchers found that, contrary to what many doctors had been taught for years, children who had lived with a pet were not at greater risk.

Extractions: dog.com vet@dog Food Allergies Part I: Ear problems Food allergies can cause signs that airborne allergies cause, but there are a few differences. Unless a dog has moved to a different part of the country and has unexpected exposure to new allergens, the typical age that you begin to see airborne food allergies, the age is usually either significantly younger or significantly older. In other words, when allergies of SOME sort seem likely in a pup under one year of age or in a dog in middle to old age, then a food allergy should be considered first. One of the earliest common manifestations of a food allergy may be recurrent ear infections. Therefore, it is appropriate to begin this food allergy discussion with a discussion on ear infections : Ear infection, as a "diagnosis", is a multifactorial issue, with causes that are neither simple to evaluate nor to treat. Most (approx.80%) ear infections are caused by allergies, even if only one ear is involved.
