Usually we use letters such as n t , or x for variables. For example, we might say that s stands for the side-length of a square. We now treat s s . The area of the square is given by s s . When working with variables, it can be helpful to use a letter that will remind you of what the variable stands for: let n be the n umber of people in a movie theater; let t be the t ime it takes to travel somewhere; let d be the d istance from my house to the park. An expression is a mathematical statement that may use numbers, variables, or both. Example: The following are examples of expressions: x y z z Example: Roland weighs 70 kilograms, and Mark weighs k kilograms. Write an expression for their combined weight. The combined weight in kilograms of these two people is the sum of their weights, which is 70 + k Example: A car travels down the freeway at 55 kilometers per hour. Write an expression for the distance the car will have traveled after

While I wrote some DERIVE routines, I became soon aware of the CLIFFORD package for Maple developed since 1996 by Rafal Ablamowicz . This package has grown substantially since that time and with the advent of the BIGEBRA extension, I was invited to be a coauthor of the package. Of course, there are further packages as Cliplus, Octonion, GTP, and code_support which will be found on the home page of CLIFFORD and BIGEBRA. CLIFFORD comes with about 120 procedures, each of them documented with an online help page included in the Maple help browser. Hence these pages are searchable. Moreover, these help pages contain examples and test to show how the procedures work, what they can do, and how they are applied. The set of help pages serves also as a set of test pages to guarantee, as fare as possible, the functionality of the package. A pdf-file containing all help files is available, but check out the most recent versions from
Extractions: PROED Students with learning disabilities in algebra classes face many difficulties. Among them are an inability to apply algorithmic knowledge to novel problems, poor arithmetic skills, and difficulty with the abstract content associated with higher-level mathematics. With this in mind, we explore some of the research on the algebra performance of students with disabilities and reasons for their difficulties. In addition, we discuss pedagogical practices that best serve students with learning disabilities in algebra. Arithmetic to Algebra Gap The difficulty with symbolic reasoning can be heightened when teachers introduce algebra concepts that are more difficult than arithmetic instruction (see Figure 1). According to some researchers, educators need to attend to the following instructional techniques to help students make connections between arithmetic to algebra and understand algebraic notation. Specifically, educators should use three principles: 1. Teach through stories that connect math instruction to students' lives. For example
