    Extractions: to 2003 Alaska Library Conference BCR's Rosario Garza, assistant director for Member Services, is looking forward to the Alaska Library Association 2003 annual conference where she can meet and talk with Alaska librarians. The conference will be held in Juneau March 7-9. Garza will present two programs. "Your Friend MARC" is scheduled from 2-3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7. Those attending will get a brief introduction to the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data and learn about its importance in helping librarians create online catalogs that are useful to patrons. During "Making Digital Collections Findable," scheduled for 4-5:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, Garza will talk about digitizing collections, making the collections available on the Internet and how to catalog them. Of particular emphasis will be the standards now used in cataloging online collections. Between programs, Garza will staff BCR's booth in the Exhibit Area.     Extractions: In the summer of 1909, a world's fair, the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, took place on the grounds of the University of Washington. The fair shaped the campus in ways that are visible today, creating the Rainier Vista and Drumheller Fountain. For many years, some of the former fair buildings were used by the University; today only Architecture Hall and Cunningham Hall remain. Landscaping for the fair was done by the famous firm of Olmsted Brothers, whose plan influenced all later designs for the campus. A succession of world's fairs took place in the United States following the tremendous popularity of the World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago in 1893. Local civic boosters successfully developed plans for such a fair in Seattle, intended to promote the region's economic and cultural ties to Alaska, the Canadian Northwest, and the Pacific Rim. The exposition opened on the grounds of the University of Washington on June 1, 1909. Frank H. Nowell was the official photographer for the exposition. These photographs, as well as hundreds of others of the fair, can be found in the Special Collections Division of the University of Washington Libraries. Other research materials about the fair such as brochures, postcards, maps, guidebooks, and scrapbooks can also be found there. Artist William Caughey created this birdseye view of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, looking to the southeast toward Mt. Rainier. Several University buildings are visible, such as Denny Hall and Parrington Hall in the right foreground. The University had moved from downtown Seattle to its present site in 1895, and most of the grounds were undeveloped before the exposition. Birdseye views were popular from the mid-nineteenth century until about 1920.

There's no privacy. Tough. That's just the way it is - and should be if it isn't - when raising a child. Parents should know what their child is doing, who their child is hanging out with, what their child is reading. It's that last one, though, that has drawn a bit of attention lately in the Legislature. The Senate last week passed a bill, Senate Bill 269, to give a child's parents or legal guardian access to that child's library records. The bill apparently didn't materialize out of some great concern that children are reading loads of books they maybe shouldn't be. Rather, some parents simply complained that they couldn't find out when their children's books were due and couldn't pick up books that had been put on hold by their children.
