This meant that Leona could home-school Rosa, which she did until Parks was eleven. When Parks was two, her family moved to Pine Level, Alabama and lived with her grandparents. Parks was a curious and stubborn girl who stood up to Whites a lot. Which, of course, led to trouble. She was yelled at and threatened by white c

Right : Teachers take water measurements and samples during an Alabama GLOBE workshop. The workshop will be one of the key activities in the Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) program introduced in April 1994 by U.S. Vice President Al Gore. GLOBE is a worldwide network of K-12 (or equivalent) students working under the guidance of teachers trained to conduct the GLOBE Program. Through GLOBE, students are taught how to take accurate global environmental measurements and enter them into the GLOBE data base using the Internet. Measurements include water and air temperatures, cloud type and percent cloud cover, rainfall quantity and acidity, water conductivity and transparency, land cover type and detailed soil analysis. They also are taught that accuracy and consistency are key to their measurements, otherwise the data will be useless.

Extractions: Ron Castle Webs Environment and the Park Tennessee is the most biodiverse inland state in the United States and the South Cumberland is one of the most biodiverse regions in Tennessee. The South Cumberland State Recreation Area is truly the wilderness heart of the southern plateau, a refuge for flora and fauna including over 700 acres of native old growth mesophytic hardwood forest in Savage Gulf, incredible diversity in the Fiery Gizzard Gulf and Hawkins Cove where 262 acres have been set aside as a natural area since 1985 to preserve the rare Cumberland Rosin Weed. Everything in nature is connected. Climate change, unplanned development, watershed use and abuse, pine monoculture conversion of native hardwood forest, clear cutting and poor logging practices, air and water pollution all have an effect on the wilderness qualities of the park and the biodiversity of our region. Wilderness has no voice of its own. It is up to each of us to speak and act for what we want the world to be and to become. The need for wilderness has been eloquently expressed by Wendell Berry from Kentucky:

Education September 12, 2000 Atlanta, Georgia - Region 4 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today announced it has awarded 12 grants totaling $100,000 as a result of the 2000 competition for environmental education grants. John H. Hankinson, Jr., Regional Administrator of EPA Region 4, said, "The grants made under the National Environmental Education Act help further the public's appreciation of the environment and an understanding of the steps needed to protect it." The grants, authorized by the National Environmental Education Act (NEEA) of 1990, are awarded to carry out environmental education projects. The winners were chosen from 120 proposals submitted by institutions and agencies in the eight southeastern states within Region 4. Proposals received by the Region sought a total of more than $1.6 million in grants of $25,000 or less. The Grants program is designed to stimulate the development of environmental education projects at the community level by local schools and environmental organizations, and to facilitate environmental education partnerships between governmental agencies, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and the private sector. Projects are intended to motivate the public to be more environmentally conscious and make responsible and balanced decisions to protect the environment.
