    Extractions: The town remained a rural agricultural center until the 1830's when the railroad brought a new era of growth. While the railroad helped in the development of Decatur, it also played a role in its devastation during the Civil War. The town was virtually destroyed as the northern and southern armies fought for control of the railroad and its bridge across the Tennessee River. After the Civil War, the railroad continued to be improtant to Decatur and the city became both a major center for rail and river traffic. In the 1930's, the city got a boost when the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was created. The TVA programs benenfited both the economy of the area through electric power and facilities for river transportation and the lifestyle of its residents, with recreational activities and wildlife preservation projects.

    Extractions: Evander McIvor Law, educator and journalist, was born in Darlington, SC, 7 August 1836. He studied in public school and attended the South Carolina Military Academy, graduating in 1856. He served as a history teacher there and at Kings Mountain Military Academy until 1860 when he moved to Tuskegee, AL, and helped to found the Military High School. Following the war, Law became involved in agricultural affairs and helped organize the Alabama Grange in 1872. He also was associated with Kings Mountain Military Academy until it closed in 1881. At that point, Law relocated to Florida and opened the Southern Florida Military Institute at Bartow. Law operated the school until 1903. He also edited the Bartow Courier-Informant (1905-1915) and served on the Bartow Board of Education from 1912 until his death. Law was also active in Confederate veterans' activities and commanded the Florida Division, helped to organize a UDC chapter in Bartow, and wrote several articles about the war. He was the last surviving Confederate Major Gen'l. He died in Bartow, 31 Oct 1920, and is buried there. William Flank Perry

For shocks outside the State borders that caused damaged to cities in Alabama, the history can be traced to 1811 - 1812, when three great (estimated magnitude 8 or greater on the Richter scale) earthquakes centered in Missouri may have reached intensity VII in the northern and/or central sections. These gigantic earthquakes were comparable to the San Francisco shock in 1906 and were felt over 2 million square miles, more than half of the total area of the United States. Historical records indicate the first earthquake of consequence in Alabama shook residents of Sumter and Marengo Counties, located in the western part of the State, on February 4, 1886 . A similar shock occurred nine days later, on February 13 . Both were reported felt at communities along the Tombigee River, but caused no damage. THE EARLY INHABITANTS The Cherokee Indians inhabited an area which included what is now north Alabama, north Georgia, a large part of Tennessee and eastern North Carolina. In Cherokee County, Alabama, at a city on the Coosa River (near the present day city of Cedar Bluff), DeSoto first met with the Cherokees in 1540. He camped at McCoy's Island for 30 days, and fought a skirmish with indians at Seven Springs. Many believe a site in Cherokee County was the site of the legendary Cherokee Indian town of Coosa. In 1816, in Turkey Town, Andrew Jackson met with representatives of the Cherokee, Creek and Chickasaw nations to settle the peace ratify a treaty to establish territorial boundaries. Among early Cherokee visitors to this area were Major Ridge, John Ridge, Elias Boudinot, John Ross, Double Head, Tarkagee, and Pathkiller. Pathkiller operated a ferry on the Coosa River near present day Centre, Alabama.
