Extractions: Called the Black Belt because of its rich, dark soil, the area of south Alabama traversed by Highway 80 on its route across the southern U.S. was the staging ground for some of Alabama's most significant moments in history. It was here that DeSoto met Tuscaloosa, cotton plantations flourished, the Confederacy was born, and civil rights were won. Follow Highway 80 through Demopolis, Selma, Montgomery, and Tuskegee on a journey through Alabama history. Covered bridges served vital needs in the days of horse drawn transportation. Today they provide picturesque recreational attractions which give visitors insight into how people lived in the past. "Bridges to the Past" will document Alabama's eleven remaining historic covered bridges which are open to the public. All were built from 1850 through the 1930's. A few are still in use for motor traffic today, but most are limited to foot traffic. Online press release available.

Patterson, Extension Weed Scientist Almost anyone living in a rural area of Alabama knows what kudzu is and that it is a pest. Kudzu in Alabama has also been called "porch vine," "telephone vine," and "wonder vine." It is only the visitor or tourist who asks the name of the aggressive and highly visible green vine. Landowners know all too well that kudzu can stifle agricultural production as well as timber growth. It often becomes a weed in noncropland areas such as road rights-of-way, old fields, vacant lots, or the yards of abandoned or little-used buildings. The problems it causes result from its rapid growth and its tendency to climb over trees or shrubs, killing them by heavy shading. Total control or eradication of kudzu can be a 3- to 10-year endeavor, usually involving the use of herbicides. Every kudzu plant must be killed, or the spread of the surviving plants will make previous control efforts useless. Success involves using effective herbicides at the proper time and the correct rate, with repeated treatments as required. Description Kudzu ( Pueraria lobata ) is a large, trifoliate-leaved, semi-woody, trailing or climbing perennial vine that belongs to the legume family. The vines may grow up to 60 feet in a single season. In the early summer, the vines may grow as much as 1 foot during a single day. This vine growth is supported by starchy, tuberous roots that can reach a depth of 12 feet in older patches and weigh 200 to 300 pounds.

The first permanent European settlement in Alabama was founded by the French at Fort Louis de la Mobile in 1702. The British gained control of the area in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris, but had to cede almost all the Alabama region to the U.S. after the American Revolution. The Confederacy was founded at Montgomery in February 1861 and, for a time, the city was the Confederate capital. 1926-90: Baptist clergyman, civil rights activist; born in Linden, Ala. An early civil rights organizer and leading confidante of Martin Luther King Jr., he was pastor of the West Hunter Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. throughout his civil rights career (196190). He was King's chosen successor as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) (196877). Although he was a competent leader, the SCLC never regained the influence it had under King. He resigned the SCLC leadership to run unsuccessfully for Andrew Young's congressional seat (1977). Turning away from the civil rights movement, he devoted his attention to the West Hunter Street Baptist Church and the issues of worldwide peace.

Extractions: Crossville Alabama Crossville is a small town on Sand Mountain in Northeast Alabama, yet it is very rich in history and tradition. Andrew Jackson battled the Creek Indians during the early 1800's in parts of this area because 250 Alabamians had been brutally murdered by the Indians. Later Cherokee Indians inhabited parts of North Alabama, but they too were eventually pushed out as more American settlers moved in. This area of Alabama attracted early settlers because of the rich soil, nearby rivers and streams, bountiful game and good climate. Most settlers moved down from parts of Georgia and Tennessee to establish the current towns and communities of North Alabama. The little village of Crossville was named by James A. Copeland, because of the many crossroads in the area. In 1888, G.W. Justice established the first business in Crossville, and then in 1903 W.B. Jones installed machinery for his cotton mills. In the middle 1800's mail was brought through Crossville from Rome, Georgia and Guntersville, Alabama by Stage Coach. Soon the town had its first U.S. Post Office, with A.C. Copeland serving as the first Postmaster. The first church to be established in the Crossville area was a Methodist Episcopal Church, called Pine Bark Church. It was formed just before the War between the States. The first Baptist Church of the community was established in 1892 at Union Grove. Later in 1925 several people started meeting at the high school and formed the First Baptist Church of Crossville. A new sanctuary was built in 1926.

Extractions: More Faces from Gurley's Past on Daguerreotypes Recently, a small box of unknown photo images was discovered in a large cardboard box placed in storage from the Berniece Lawler estate, Gurley, Alabama. The box contained several very old photos, so old in fact, they were printed on what appears to be, copper plates. These photos were referred to as daguerreotypes. This was a process of shooting and fusing an image on thin silver and copper plates. The photos are quite interesting and are photos of some of the Gurley, Criner, and Walker families during the late 1800s. Luckily, someone had written most of their names on the back of the paper frames holding the images. It is known that daguerreotype images appeared as early as the 1840s. Most of these photos below were taken in the 1870s and it is possible a few were taken as early as the late 1860s. One of the photos is labeled " John Gurley ". This writer's first impression was this rare photo might be face of the founder of Gurley and builder of Gurley's Tank? All of these folks pictured were friends and relatives of the Capt. Elijah F. Walker family and no doubt lived in Gurley or nearby. Elijah F Walker married Matilda Gurley, daughter of William Rutledge Gurley who was the son of John Gurley (1788-1868). John Gurley died in 1868 at eighty years old. These daguerreotypes are of much younger looking men therefore, it seems more probable these photos are early images of the sons of William Rutledge Gurley. His sons were John, James, Thomas, and Joseph. Had the first image below been of an older man in his seventies, it could have been the town's founder. The image of the John Gurley shown below is Matilda Gurley's brother John Williams Gurley. The Criner family members below were all descendents of Joseph and Isaac Criner, among the first settlers of Madison County.

The county was established February 4, 1814 by the Alabama Territorial Legislature, preceded only by Madison (1808), Mobile(1812) and Clark (1812) counties, which had been organized from Mississippi territory. Illustrious American patriot Benjamin Franklin had been dead less than 30 years, when a large tract of land in Northwest Alabama was dubbed Franklin County in his honor. The county originally extended north to the Tennessee River, but a parcel was later divided off and became Colbert County. It is a land that once was called home by several Indian Tribes, most notably the Chickasaws, Creeks and Cherokees.
