Extractions: state's master's degrees in reading. For example, award-winning Samford University in Birmingham made major changes in how they teach future teachers to teach reading. And higher education faculty have served as K-12 ARI mentors and are training and certifying ARI reading specialists to ensure teachers are learning to teach to the same high reading standards across the state. The reading wars are over. Drawing upon an exhaustive literature review, the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences recently called for a research-proven approach to teaching reading. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has called for an overhaul to reading preparation and concluded that teaching reading is rocket science. The AFT calls for teacher preparation that ensures teachers understand the content of instruction, use effective informal classroom assessments, and apply best practice in all aspects of reading instruction. The implications for teacher education and professional development are enormous. Teacher education programs that do not incorporate these reading standards should not be allowed to continue to prepare teachers. States must craft teaching policies that give teachers relicensure credits only in those areas proven to bring results, like the professional development associated with ARI. States should pay teachers more when they go through such training, even more when they change their teaching practices, and still more when they produce gains like those at West Blocton. Furthermore, while avoiding the tendency just to add more days for all teachers, states must provide structured time for teachers to have focused professional development required for initiatives such as ARI.

Site Tools From "A Nation at Risk" to "No Child Left Behind", efforts to improve K-12 education have increasingly recognized that improvement requires reform of a host of interconnected systems that make up education as we know it. "School reform" still means many things to many people, but there is widespread agreement that it must be more than just "tinkering around the edges." All of our projects share in common a clear focus on applied research and technical assistance that reflects equity and diversity issues within schools. Projects relating to this topic are listed here. For a state-by-state listing of projects, see Where We Work The LAB will conduct a study that systematically investigates how the implementation of the Breaking Ranks framework supports effective high school reform and improved teaching and learning in urban low-performing schools. Through this study, the conditions and strategies necessary for achieving and sustaining positive change and improvement in low-performing schools will be documented, and resultant effects on student learning and achievement for diverse student populations will be documented. This research activity will be conducted by staff of the LAB and Center for Resource Management (CRM) in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the NASSP state affiliates in this region, the Providence, RI school district, the Yonkers, NY school district, and the Malden, MA school district.
