Extractions: If you are the parent of a child with physical or mental disabilities, you know you must take into account your child's psychological, educational and social needs when making a decision that will have a major impact on your family life. Whether or not to accept an expatriate assignment is certainly such a decision. Clearly, the choice should be made in the context of all family members' needs. Career and personal considerations for you and your spouse, as well as the educational and social needs of your other children will also come into play. But perhaps the central issue will be whether you can find appropriate support and educational services for your child in the assignment location. And, if not, are there alternatives that will enable you to accept the assignment and still meet the needs of your child?

Extractions: By Vicky Oliver, LPN You are here: Home Directories Hospitals To Be A Nurse Takes A Special Kind Of Person As an LPN for the last ten years I believe I could give some insight on my experience as a nurse. I am the type of person who is always doing something for others instead of me. My experiences in nursing consist of Medical Surgical, Doctors' Office, Emergency Room, Surgery, GI Lab, Urology, Utilization Review, Recovery Room, and the Nursing Home. Anyone that goes into the nursing profession needs to be a very caring person, someone who wants to give to others and someone that is very dedicated. Unless you work for a very rich medical facility then the falling issues will always be in the air. Adequate staffing vs. short staffing, management vs. need of staff, patient needs vs. patients suffering, mentally exhausted due to overworked, and stress. A nurse has to learn to prioritize the most important issues at hand and put them first. Team players have to learn to accommodate until things can be made better. If all staff members learn to do the maximum patient care and not the minimum patient care then the next person coming on will not be behind but have a good start to their shift. I recommend the nursing profession for you if you work as a nursing assistant first to see how it really is and not just white uniforms and being a boss. If you can find a job with adequate orientation time for new nurses, bearable facility environment, a job with some benefits, insurance, and pay raises then I recommend the nursing profession for you.

Extractions: Clayton and Johnson The finger of Uncle Sam in I Want You recruitment posters will soon be pointing at persons with disabilities. General Colin Powell is currently mobilizing an all volunteer army to meet a major national emergency. There is no inductee in this army who will be classified as 4 F and exempted from serving. How many persons with disabilities and their advocates will hear the call and take up the challenge? One of the authors (Robert C) is an advocate. He and other advocates have not had a very good beginning in ensuring inclusion of persons with disabilities in the Presidents' Summit. They failed to communicate to the Summit planners, General Powell, and Uncle Sam an awareness of the special needs and talents of persons with disabilities. The ability to create a special forces unit build around self advocates like co-author Robert J. was not articulated. The result of this missed opportunity was an under representation of youth and adults with disabilities at the Summit in Philadelphia. The delegates from the 150 communities that attended left Pennsylvania without an understanding of the potential of including persons with disabilities into their action plans as an at risk population that could simultaneously serve and be served.
