Extractions: As the film industry incorporates more exotic locales, and relationships between people in different parts of the country or world, the need for movie friendly airports in which to shoot has never been greater. With the architectural style and grace of Chicago's O'Hare Airport, especially the Helmut Jahn designed Terminal One, O'Hare has become one of the most sought after airports to film in, in the world. "We shoot a lot of different airport scenes here," the Chicago Department of Aviation program director, Judith Hamill stated. "Not only do we shoot the Chicago scenes here, but directors have shot O'Hare to double for LaGuardia, San Francisco, Cleveland and even Paris." Generally speaking, O'Hare doubles for other airports for financial reasons. In 1989, director Chris Columbus and writer/producer John Hughes were on the north shore in Winnetka filming a movie called Home Alone , a feature that would later go on to gross nearly $300 million. "We have a consultant that we work with who basically told us that this firm that he had come across seemed like they were so similar to our firm that the cultural match would have been incredible," Whisler said. Whisler said the companies began working on the acquisition last May. Leo A Daly officials liked what they saw in the Minneapolis firm, and the acquisition became official on Feb. 1. Specific terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Defense-related work for the U.S. government spurred growth for Leo A Daly in the 1950s and '60s, and the Omaha firm was interested in re-entering that market.

This is not exactly breaking news, according to consulting meteorologists, but as Paul Gipe observes, the report is a timely indicator of the future direction of the US wind industry. The US Midwest offers a greater wind resource than has previously been thought GE WIND Reuters picked up the story from a press release. Within five days, 10 media outlets had covered the topic, including CNN. The European wind industry was abuzz: the United States has far more wind energy potential than once thought, the American 'El Dorado' was an even richer prize than they had dreamed. A quarter of the US was windy enough to compete with coal-fired generation, or so said the report. By the end of the news cycle, Europeans were excitedly calling their Yankee colleagues for more details. They were puzzled by the collective yawn in some US circles.

Speaking a day after travelers waited up to an hour in a line leading to the airport's 10 security lanes and four airlines were forced to hold flights, Mayor Richard Daley said federal officials need to hire more screeners. "You beef up your staff," he said at a news conference Tuesday. "At certain hours you do that." But other than an 11th security lane being added this weekend, there is no space for more screeners, according to the Transportation Security Administration, which is in charge of airport security. New materials, forms, and environmental sensitivities call for more sophisticated building modeling. Design and project delivery processes are changing rapidly as data-based, computer-aided 3D design creates a new "4-D" approach. SMMA's 10-year strategic plan focuses on key goals to reposition our firm with current clients and energize us with new and varied future clients. Underlying our plan is a renewed understanding of our position and responsibility as a leader within the design community and a refreshed commitment to be the firm of choice for talented planners, architects, engineers, and interior designers. As our history reflects, SMMA has always thrived on change and innovation. The firm's original design commissions included distribution, light manufacturing, and airfreight facility projects at Logan Airport, a flight kitchen for United Airlines, and an office building for Northeast Airlines. The company's "spirits" were lifted with distribution facilities for the liquor industry, including Seagrams. The Towns of Framingham and Lexington MA, and West Hartford CT awarded the firm projects that established our early reputation as designers of municipal ice-skating arenas.

Main After spending more than 10 hours in the airports of Milwaukee and Baltimore (BWI) in the past five days, I have a few observations I would like to make about flying (in today's environment). Mind you, I love traveling and I especially enjoy flying and airports. I've been in airplanes since I was a baby and can never really remember an actual flight that caused me problems (and believe me, there have been plenty of flights in my life). 1) Someone who actually travels should make changes to the way that airport security is conducted. While I cannot totally complain about the way bags are screened and searched, the facilities to screen people and baggage are entirely inadequate and horribly designed. For the billions of dollars that have been pumped into airports around the country on architectural wonders and shopping enjoyment, the screening process is entirely too cramped and too difficult to understand for slower people, older people and especially people who have never flown before. I understand that the times have changed and the way baggage and people are screened is different - and they are changes that I don't find too bothersome - other than stupid questions like, has anyone asked you to carry luggage on the plane for them?
