Since that time, DOCOMOMO's network of volunteers comprised of architects, historians and preservationists have organized numerous exhibitions, tours and educational events relating to Modern Movement architecture and sites. The region is rich in its wide-range of modern buildings representing diverse interests and styles from corporate icons such as Lever House, the Seagrams Building and CBS, to town houses by Lescaze and Stone as well as suburban houses in Connecticut and New Jersey. In addition to offering several events each year, the group conducts preservation advocacy for important modern buildings in the region, publishes a biannual newsletter and holds monthly meetings for members and others interested in Modern Movement architecture and design. The chapter is working with the local landmarks commission and other local nonprofits and university architecture programs to document and identify lesser known modern buildings. Recent Programs: Havana Modern, Brasilia 2000 (with the Americas Society), Architecture Comes of Age (with Friends of the Upper East Side), and the Alvar Aalto's Viipuri Library Travelling Exhibition held at Columbia University, the California College of Arts and Crafts San Francisco Campus and the American Institute of Architects Offices in San Francisco.

Extractions: Entries Publication Data Advisory Board Contributors ... World Civilizations The Reader's Companion to American History From its colonial and Native American origins unto the present day, American architecture has been exceptionally complex, both in the multiple traditions from which it has drawn and in the variations of style and public response it has produced. Architecture has also been caught up in the commercial domain. Major commercial buildingsbusiness blocks and department stores in the nineteenth century, office towers and shopping malls in the twentiethdominate the public domain of most cities. There has been no official patronage of certain firms for governmental commissions. Instead architects compete for most jobs; they must sell their skills and new ideas to the public; and they constantly vie with builders, who still produce the bulk of new housing and commercial buildings in this country. Efforts to promote hegemonic styles and master architects, though continually asserted, have never fully prevailed. When the first European settlers arrived in the New World, some two hundred nations of Native Americans had already developed their own architectural traditions. The pueblo, hogan, longhouse, and tipi remain evocative images. Likewise, the colonialists' Spanish mission and the clapboard-sided New England dwelling of the seventeenth century endure as romantic prototypes in many parts of the country, suggesting a synthesis of local cultures into an idealized homogeneous societya recurring theme in American cultural history.

Extractions: With the increasing attention being devoted to historic preservation in recent years, architectural records have taken on greater importance. Less than two decades ago, no more than a handful of repositories were actively collecting and preserving these documents. Today, it is difficult to find a state in which a repository of architectural records does not exist. The Northwest Architectural Archives was begun in 1970. The archives collects the records of architects, engineers, contractors, landscape architects, and interior designers from a region which includes Minnesota, western Wisconsin, northern Iowa, and the eastern Dakotas. Every type of document generated by these individuals and firms is collected: drawings of all kinds, specifications, job files, and photographs are chiefly sought. The collections span nearly 130 years of work by many notable practitioners.

Extractions: An effort to boost the PFC ceiling from $3 to $4 narrowly failed in the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on Thursday during consideration of the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) reauthorization bill (Airport Report Express, 7/8/98). Sen. Slade Gorton (R-Wash.), chairman of the Senate aviation subcommittee, led the attempt to increase the PFC limit and lost by a vote of 8 to 11. Senators voting for the PFC increase were: Gorton, Conrad Burns (R-Mont.), Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), Wendell Ford (D-Ky.), Jay Rockefeller (D-W. Va.), John Kerry (D-Mass.), Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.). Senators voting against the PFC increase were: John McCain (R-Ariz.), Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Trent Lott (R-Miss.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), John Ashcroft (R-Mo.), Spencer Abraham (R-Mich.), Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), John Breaux (D-La.), Richard Bryan (D-Nev.), and Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.). Immediately after the vote on PFCs, consideration of the full bill was delayed until July 14. As drafted, the legislation is a four-year bill. However, it is expected that when the committee reconvenes tomorrow, Ford will offer an amendment to reduce the length of the reauthorization to one year.

The Competition is supported by an endowment given to the Washington University School of Architecture in honor of James Harrison Steedman, who received a degree in mechanical engineering from Washington University in 1889, and was killed in active duty during World War I. The memorial was established by Steedman's widow, Mrs. Alexander Weddel, and Steedman's brother, George. The Steedman Traveling Fellowship enables graduates of accredited professional degree programs in architecture around the world to travel for architectural research and study in foreign countries for a period of nine months. The $30,000 Fellowship is awarded to the winner of the Steedman International Design Competition. The award is based on the quality of the selected winner's competition design entry, but the quality of his/her research proposal is also considered. Candidates must be graduates of an accredited school of architecture, and be currently employed in, or have completed at least one year of practical experience in the office of a practicing architect. Candidates are eligible to compete for up to eight years after receipt of their professional degrees, regardless of age. Citizens of all countries are eligible to compete for the Fellowship.

Extractions: Home Update Latest Issue Gallery ... FR 11/97 by Heiko Reuter When Bill Lonergan talks of his snowplows, he gets going. As Deputy Commissioner Airside Operations, he is controlling a fleet of 200 of the yellow vehicles. His job is "to keep O'Hare open - under all circumstances". Not an easy task. The winter brings plenty of ice and snow and, in this part of the country, the cold season sometimes lasts for six months. Chicago O'Hare is holding numerous superlatives. It is not just an airport. O'Hare is an air traffic hub of gigantic dimensions and, a significant economical factor. Measured by the number of passengers, the airport located at the southern extension of Lake Michigan has been the world's number one for years. More than 69 million passengers arrived or departed from O'Hare in 1996. Frankfurt airport in Germany, which is the largest airport in continental Europe, "only" counted 39 million passengers in the same time frame. With 32 million passengers, the new Denver airport, which is celebrated as the largest airport in size, only ranges in 11th place on the global scale: No comparison, an O'Hare representative says. The O'Hare managers are praising their airport as "the world capitol of commercial air traffic" and are not getting tired of pointing out the achievements. Just to address some of them: No other airport counts that many take-offs and landings (in 1996: 900.000 movements on the seven runways). The airport gets its power supply from its own power plant. The amount of concrete used for the ramp areas would have been enough to build a 130 centimeter wide sidewalk from Chicago to New York.

When it hits the Louisiana delta, the long ribbon frays into a tangled network of rivers, bayous and vast wetlands. New Orleans rests at the very tip of the delta. The riverfront, which was formerly a warren of decaying warehouses and docks, has recently been spruced up, lined with hotels and sidewalks. You won't find a lot of small craft on the big river, but right outside of town is a wilderness of wetlands aching to be explored. Paddling Off the Edge of the Big Easy Chattahoochee River: Atlanta L. J. DeCuir, a recent guest on GORP's forum, tells the story better than anyone."There are very few major urban centers in the entire world where you can fish for trout year around only minutes from downtown. The Chattahoochee River in Atlanta, Georgia is one of these places. With numerous wade and canoe/kayak access points along its length you can literally walk out of a business meeting and into the river in minutes."
