Nordic Airport Architecture the functional and architectural demands on us in the 4 A look at the development of airport architecture. opening Lars Rekke, Directorgeneral, Swedish Civil http://www.bv.lth.se/airportarchitecture/print.htm
Extractions: The conference aims to present the characteristics of modern airport architecture and its suitability as applied to Nordic airports early in the 21st century. Does a separate style of Nordic airport architecture exist? The conference deals mainly with airport architecture in the ten-year period 1995-2005. In conjunction with the conference, an exhibition of modern Nordic airport architecture will be arranged at the Museum of Sketches for Public Art in Lund. BACKGROUND Air travel grew strongly in the late 1990s. Becoming inadequate, old airports and their buildings became bottlenecks in the air-traffic flow. A comprehensive extension of airports is going on. New runways, terminal buildings are coming into existence. The centres of architectural and investment gravity have hitherto lain in extending the main national airports. Many of the smaller airports have also required extension, partly because air-traffic patterns have changed. In parallel to these Nordic developments, the capacities of airports in all parts of Europe have become correspondingly larger. Airports comprise the intersections of a global communications network and are the framework for one of the most dynamic activities in modern society. At the end of the 1990s, optimism about air travel was remarkable. The large and growing numbers of people that this transportation apparatus deals with require that airports must be extended and are today often the largest construction projects in their countries. The complexity of their activities, new requirements for security and frontier controls, a strong technical development within this industry, demands on the physical structures of buildings for adaptability and flexibility, and altered conditions for operating economics; together put great demands on the work of forming airport terminals. An important architectural basis for the conference is the renewal of the five Nordic capital airports.

AGATE Revitalizing General Aviation an integral part of the air traffic system architecture. environment increases airspace and airport access, safety the value of engaging us engineering students http://oea.larc.nasa.gov/PAIS/AGATE.html
Extractions: July 1996 *** NOTE: The AGATE program was completed in December 2001 "AGATE is visible evidence of the commitments of NASA, the FAA, and the industry and university community to two important endeavors: first, to revitalize U.S. general aviation, and second, to reinvent government along the way . . . The AGATE Consortium represents the dawning of a new era for NASA and industry in terms of the ways we do business together. Together, we are undertaking a challenge neither of us could accomplish apart." AGATE Press Conference, July 1995 The challenge for the Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments (AGATE) consortium is to create a Small Aviation Transportation System (SATS) as an alternative to short-range automotive trips for both private and business transportation needs. For example, using small aircraft would allow business executives to travel to three plants 250 miles apart in a single day-drastically cutting back travel time. The SATS will make many time-sensitive short-haul trips more affordable for business, medical, public safety and recreational pursuits. The creation of the AGATE Consortium in 1994 is changing the face of general aviation-related aerospace. The NASA-led consortium, born out of an effort to stem the gradual decline of general aviation in this country, is playing an instrumental role in the forging of new alliances between government and interested parties, including vital non-profit contributors.

Extractions: National General Aviation Roadmap Definition for a A Small Aircraft Transportation System Concept Abstract This paper presents trends and forces that shape 21 st century demand for higher-speed personal air transportation and outlines guidance developed by NASA in partnership with other federal and state government and industry partners, for Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS) investment and partnership planning. Early 21 st Century Transportation Issues and Opportunities.- Several converging forces are fundamentally re-shaping transportation demand characteristics as we move into the first decade of the 21 st century, including the following: The maturing of the hub-spoke infrastructure into the maturity phase of its natural growth cycle; A "third wave" migration of Americans and their jobs from the suburbs to more rural locations; The transformation of industry from standardized to customized products and services (including transportation) during the shift from the industrial to the information age; The soaring value of human time (and therefore the premium of doorstep-to-destination speed) during the information age;

Extractions: Helsinki-Malmi Airport: a threatened pearl of 1930's functionalism History Regular air traffic from Helsinki began in 1924 to Tallinn and Stockholm using floatplanes operating from Katajanokka seaplane airport in the heart of the capital. In Scandinavian countries with their long stretches of seashore and countless lakes, floatplanes could be commercially operated longer than in central Europe, where they were being replaced by land-based aircraft. In the beginning of the 1930's, land-based commercial air traffic with regular schedules had established itself in central Europe to such a degree that building airports on land became a prerequisite for joining the European air traffic route network both in Sweden and in Finland. This was considered necessary for both international cooperation and trade.

The vast Pacific Ocean forms her western border, the balmy Caribbean Sea the east. Is is a warm and friendly land of lakes and mountains; rivers and volcanoes, sea and sun. The country is divided into three geographic regions: the Pacific Lowlands on the west, the mountainous Central Region and the Atlantic Lowlands on the east. The Pacific Lowlands: This lowland area runs from the Gulf of Fonseca, on Nicaragua's Pacific border with Costa Rica south of Lake Nicaragua. From this lowland strip, the Maribios mountain range, with its 25 volcanic cones, towers overs some of the most beautiful and impressive beaches found anywhere else in Central America. This region is the most populated. About 27 percent of the nation's entire population lives in and around Managua, the capital city, on the southern shores of Lake Managua. Few Latin American capital cities share Managua's picturesque location. Being on an open plain, it does not suffer the pollution of other capitals trapped in mountain valleys. In addition to its beach and resort communities, the Pacific Lowlands is also the repository for much of Nicaragua's Spanish colonial heritage. Cities such as Granada and Leon abound in Spanish colonial architecture and artifacts.

My statement today will focus on two critical issues: the Year 2000 computing crisis and computer security. It will also address the need to correct underlying weaknesses in FAA 's management that have allowed these and other key information technology problems to persist. In doing so I will report on actions taken by FAA in response to our recommendations on the Year 2000 problem and computer security,1 the risks that remain on both of these issues, and FAA 's efforts to address our recommendations to improve the way it manages information technology.
