Even today, barely forty-eight hours after the shuttle exploded over Texas, the lead article in the Wall Street Journal bears the headline, "Shuttle Crash Raises Questions About Future of Manned Flights," and begins, "Why is America still sending men and women into space?" Journal ’s question, "Why?" is a simple "Why not?" A NASA flight controller quoted by the Journal gives a somewhat more elaborate answer: "The human race has been about exploration since it crawled out of the swamps on four legs. If you’re not exploring, you’re dying." Times declares that the best possible outcome of the disaster would be the scrapping of the manned space program and the shifting of the billions of dollars thus saved to improving the science programs in our public schools. The best I can do in dealing with such remarks is to refer the anti-space people to the remarks of the NASA controller I quote above, and let them try to refute them. School science programs would not be well served by a curtailment of such a dramatic form of scientific research as the exploration of space.)

(spoken version) Through the news media we have all become familiar with the emerging rituals around the deaths of celebrities like Olof Palme, Yitzhak Rabin and Princess Diana. Such public behaviour show striking parallels with an emerging repertoire of rituals performed when disasters (such as airplane crashes, explosions and sunken ferries) have struck a community, a city or a nation. On closer study there is invention as well as imitation and repetition. In this paper I attempt to trace a few characteristics of such rituals of communal grieving and protesting. It appears that within the major phenomenon of recent ritualising, especially sudden unexpected and unmerited death is a moment of collective ritual density. Is this public ritualising an instance of civil religion? Most of the presentations we have heard during this conference had to do with small groups, with alternative belief systems, with self-chosen identities.

But, Astrology itself is not a religion. It is simply a set of rules that one must follow to determine physical outcomes based on the position of the stars and planets relative to Earth. The premise of whether or not the set of rules that make up an Astrological system have real relevance to humans and events on Earth is testable, and will continue to be tested by myself and other scientists who are interested in this phenomenon. Astrology has the potential of being a science because it is so highly structured and results are governed by strict rules. While it is true that delineation of character traits is often qualitative and subjective and therefore hard to test, Astrology that applies to prediction of specific mundane events such as the probability of airplane crashes or the success or failure of NASA missions, can be quantified and is indeed very structured. This kind of Astrological prediction lends itself quite nicely to studies such as this. Astrology of the past was a practical thing, not only limited to personality descriptions (which it also does quite well when applied properly). Astrology was used and trusted for such matters as when to take a journey, when to marry, when to start a business, and so on. If it was so relied on and used back then, why did people trust it so much? Though people who lived hundreds of years ago are often depicted as ignorant or the superstitious because they lacked the knowledge of today, it is also true that they were capable of being just as intelligent and perceptive as we are today, even if they were less informed than we. Military geniuses such as Napoleon, physics genius Isaac Newton, Pythagoras of ancient Greece, and many others, prove that the past was peopled with the brilliant as well as the superstitious. Be that as it may, was it truly just "lack of knowledge" that caused people to seek out Astrologers for advice, or was there something to it?

There are standard procedures for handling of mass disaster and multiple deaths, and these procedures have been in place for decades. They were developed with the knowledge accumulated by rescuing people and recovering remains in mine cave-ins, airplane crashes, structural collapses, fires, earthquakes, and hurricanes. These procedures were developed by forensic anthropologists, police agencies, firemen and rescue workers, and public health officials in the US and overseas. These well developed procedures do not have to be reinvented each time a disaster occurs. The example of an airplane crash will suffice. Living people are rescued first, if there are any. If not, the rescue workers' first concern is the recovery of human remains, and then with the wreckage. This was underscored recently during the recovery of bodies from TWA flight 800, which exploded off the coast of Long Island, New York in July, 1996. James Kallstrom of the FBI said, " We want the fuselage, we want the rest of the airplane. And a higher priority than that, we want the bodies." (Washington Post, July 21, 1996.)
