A diagnosis of AIDS is made by a physician using certain clinical criteria.

One of the biggest misconceptions about AIDS is that only certain "high-risk" groups are infected with the virus. Who you are has nothing to do with whether you are in danger of being infected with the aids virus. What matters are the behaviors in which you engage. People are worried about getting AIDS. Some have a reason to be worried and need to make some lifestyle changes and take precautions to protect themselves. On the other hand, many people are in no danger of contracting AIDS based on the life they lead.

Selvom man snakker om HIV i ental, findes virus i mange forskellige former. Dette gør udviklingen af en effektiv vaccine vanskelig, ligesom mutationerne kan medføre at HIV udvikler modstandsdygtighed (resistens) overfor den behandling som har til formål at bremse formeringen (se nedenfor). Som navnet antyder ødelægger HIV det menneskelige immunsystem, som er helt nødvendigt for at vi undgår en række livstruende infektioner. Når immunsystemet er tilstrækkeligt ødelagt begynder disse livstruende infektioner derfor at dukke op. Når den første infektion er påvist har patienten udviklet AIDS. AIDS står for "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome", på dansk " erhvervet immun defekt syndrom". AIDS er altså ikke direkte forårsaget af HIV selv, men er derimod et spørgsmål om i hvilken grad HIV har været i stand til at ødelægge immunsystemet.
