The first experiment in Scotland in cultivating potatoes in the field was made at Kilsyth, in 1739. An entire half acre was planted, and many persons came from great distances to see the extraordinary novelty. But it was not till about 1760 that the potato was generally cultivated, even in gardens; and, for twenty years thereafter, it was not greatly in use as an article of food in the North of Scotland. The turnip, which had received earlier attention iii Norfolk, seems to have been introduced into Aberdeenshire about the year 1750. One of the Old Statistical writers says, "Mr. Burnett of Kemnay is said to have been the first farmer in the county of Aberdeen who raised turnips in the fields ;" but he gives no date, The first time turnips were seen in Kincardineshire. was about 1754; and ten years thereafter, in 1764, they were still so great a rarity—half an acre being deemed a large plot—that they were sold, by the few who grew them in small quantities, at the rate of a penny the stone weight as kitchen vegetables.

On his third survey, The social state of the inhabitants, urban and rural, is statistically given in a few compendious sentences—" The inhabitants are sober and industrious; and the following particulars will show that wages and provisions are moderate :—The wages paid to labourers in remote parts are from 5d. to 7d. per day; at Aberdeen, 9d. in winter and 12d. in summer. The women are so well employed in knitting stockings as scarce to undertake field work, even at 6d. Beef gives 2½d. a-pound, and mutton 3d.—Dutch weight. In the spring, beef and mutton rise to 3½d., 4d., and 4½d. per lb., there being little or no early grass in the county. A pound of butter, of 28 oz., can be had for 7d., and cheese, poultry, and meal in proportion. They have indeed no coal but what is imported. Peats they have in plenty; but they are too remote from many places to be a cheap firing."

Extractions: The Museum was founded in 1951 by the University of Reading and now forms part of the University's Rural History Centre. It was the first specialist museum of farming and rural life to be established in England and so was able to acquire large collections of high quality material at a time when mechanisation was bringing great changes to the countryside. It also played an important pioneering part in the formulation of procedures for the processing, cataloguing and conservation of such material. Today, the Museum operates as the publicly accessible arm of the Rural History Centre and is active at a national and international level in all aspects of rural museums. Collections description The collections cover the broad range of material relating to farming, rural crafts and industries, and country life. The bulk of the items date from the period 1850 to 1950. Pre 1850 farm tools and equipment are rare in England. Post 1950, the sheer range and size of farm machinery are inhibitors given the level of exhibition and storage space that we have available. This is why so much emphasis has been placed on reflecting this period through the two dimensional collections - especially the photographs and technical literature - of the Rural History Centre.
