Extractions: May 4, 2004 -Tara Singh's farm is a microcosm of the farming challenges facing the Indo-Gangetic Plains. Singh and his family are progressive farmers experimenting with zero tillage and bed planting, two techniques promoted by the Rice-Wheat Consortium of the Indo-Gangetic Plains that is helping farmers to better manage land and water resources while producing more food at less cost. The Consortium recently hosted a visit by The Hon. David Mulford, U.S. Ambassador to India. The visitors were shown family farms to see first-hand how conservation agriculture is benefiting farmers, the local economy, and the environment. Ambassador Mulford said he was "impressed" to see that the techniques developed "work in fields and farmers are using them to their advantage." The techniques developed by Consortium partners help conserve water, improve the quality of the soil, reduce the use of fuel in farming, and improve weed control. In the past three years, the Rice-Wheat Consortium has made rapid strides. Wheat yields are 10-17% higher compared to conventional tillage, while production costs are lower ($65-180 per hectare). The Consortium's work is a prime example of a public-private partnership, with private companies supplying the drills, land leveling equipment, insecticide sprayers, power tillers, and seed dryers. At last count, more than 20,000 drills were provided by 80 companies.
