Extractions: The next quarter of a century began with the United States entering a second world war, which required the Federal government to impose new or expanded controls over the countrys economy. The transition to a peacetime economy, with its economic and political problems, was followed by the Korean conflict and the relative prosperity of the 1950s and 1960s. During this later period, there were many shifts in the countrys economy and the growth of a new political awareness of social and economic problems encountered by its disadvantaged citizens that led to new legislation to shape the American workforce. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and the ensuing entry of the United States into World War II, the Federal Government mobilized its resources and the countrys industrial might. On January 6, 1942, President Roosevelt announced ambitious wartime production goals. In response, all the countrys economic sectors came under new or increased Government controls.

Stereotype Busters Reducing Prejudice Understanding Prejudice People Tags Fighting Words With Words Promoting Understanding Reducing Prejudice Class Time Needed: 40 minutes Materials: "Reducing Prejudice" worksheets for each student Objectives Introduction Gordon Allport defines prejudice as "an attitude in a closed mind." In a closed mind, an attitude is cut off from new information. At its least dangerous level, prejudice is a filter that keeps one person from seeing beyond a stereotypical image. When a prejudiced person takes an action that prevents another person or a group from exercising Constitutional or human rights, then discrimination is at work. "Reducing Prejudice" is designed to call attention to intolerant behaviors that are the starting point of discrimination and to help students practice alternatives to prejudice. Procedure Distribute copies of the worksheet, "Reducing Prejudice,"

Extractions: PAUL EMENS, VICE CHAIRMAN AIR LINE PILOTS AGAINST AGE DISCRIMINATION TESTIMONY BEFORE THE HOUSE AVIATION SUBCOMMITTEE MARCH 12, 2003 I represent the pilots of ALPAAD (Air Line Pilots Against Age Discrimination). We wish to see the Age 60 Rule amended to at least the age of 65. Others supporting our goal are the AARP, EEOC, Southwest Airlines Pilots Association (SWAPA), Organization of Black Airline Pilots (OBAP), and the Professional Pilots Federation (PPF). Thank you for giving me the opportunity to address you today. It has been over twenty years since pilots supporting a change in the Age 60 Rule have had the opportunity to make our case before you. That was 1979 when the House of Representatives passed a bill amending the rule. Back then the Air Line Pilots Association led the fight to amend the rule and had done so for twenty years. My father, an ALPA pilot for Pan American World Airways walked these congressional halls in an effort to overturn the Age 60 Rule. That legislation ultimately failed to become law and shortly afterward ALPA reversed its position, shifting from supporting change to opposing change. 26 years after my father was forced to retire. I, and others like me, continue the fight.

Extractions: Environmentalists and political parties would secure wider public support if they were more effective at linking environmental issues to poverty and ill-health, according to the Institute for Public Policy Research (ippr). In a new report published today, ippr says rather than thinking there are votes in rare birds and pandas, environmentalists should be linking up poverty, pollution and the quality of local environments. Ippr's research says industrial sites are disproportionately located in deprived areas, while children living in deprived areas are five times more likely to be killed by a car. The report shows that in deprived communities, lack of access to clean air and green spaces can often exacerbate respiratory diseases, like asthma, and other health problems such as obesity. Julie Foley, ippr Senior Research Fellow, said: "In developing countries, environmental issues are so bound up with issues of poverty and distributive justice that they are almost indistinguishable. In the UK, the same dynamic is in play, with our poorest communities often most affected by environmental problems but the links have not been made effectively. For environmentalists, making the connection between environmental protection and distributive justice should underpin their understanding of sustainable development. It is the interaction between people and the environment that offers greater appeal and why there simply aren't any votes in birds and pandas.
African American Odyssey: The Civil Rights Era (Part 1) on the detrimental effects of racial exclusion and discrimination. New York worldTelegram Sun Collection, Prints and famous home run record at the age of 40 http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/aaohtml/exhibit/aopart9.html
Extractions: The post-war era marked a period of unprecedented energy against the second class citizenship accorded to African Americans in many parts of the nation. Resistance to racial segregation and discrimination with strategies such as civil disobedience, nonviolent resistance, marches, protests, boycotts, "freedom rides," and rallies received national attention as newspaper, radio, and television reporters and cameramen documented the struggle to end racial inequality. There were also continuing efforts to legally challenge segregation through the courts. Success crowned these efforts: the Brown decision in 1954, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act in 1965 helped bring about the demise of the entangling web of legislation that bound blacks to second class citizenship. One hundred years after the Civil War, blacks and their white allies still pursued the battle for equal rights in every area of American life. While there is more to achieve in ending discrimination, major milestones in civil rights laws are on the books for the purpose of regulating equal access to public accommodations, equal justice before the law, and equal employment, education, and housing opportunities. African Americans have had unprecedented openings in many fields of learning and in the arts. The black struggle for civil rights also inspired other liberation and rights movements, including those of Native Americans, Latinos, and women, and African Americans have lent their support to liberation struggles in Africa.

Extractions: Introduction Books Treatises Law Review Articles ... Websites With increasing frequency, companies are asking employees to sign agreements containing clauses requiring that legal conflicts be resolved through arbitration rather than a formal lawsuit. Courts are repeatedly being asked to consider whether such clauses are enforceable, especially in the context of employment discrimination cases. Within the past few years the trend has been for courts to enforce the arbitration clauses, finding that nothing in the law prevents this alternative resolution of disputes. This bibliography provides sources pertaining to the topic of the history of mandatory arbitration clauses in the employment context, focusing on the recent trend to enforce the clauses despite a strong opposition by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Many courts have noted that arbitration clauses should be interpreted under the basic principles of contract law. This approach will be discussed, for the lay person, in a spring of 2000 bibliography.
