Extractions: Helsinki, Finland, 13-18 July, 2003 This subject was until recently called Sanskrit and Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at the University of Helsinki, in accordance with traditions going back to the early 19th century. Sir William Jones, one of the European pioneers in the study of Sanskrit, the classical language of India, noted in 1786 that Sanskrit bears to both Greek and Latin "a stronger affinity both in the roots of verbs and the forms of grammar than could possibly have been produced by accident; so strong indeed that no philologer could examine them at all without believing them to have sprung from some common source, which perhaps no longer exists"; he added Gothic, Celtic and Old Persian as other members of the same family, which has been called "Indo-European" since 1813. In 1816 Franz Bopp demonstrated the genetic affinity of these languages with a detailed comparative study of their verbal inflection; this is generally considered to mark the beginning of comparative linguistics. Sanskrit began being taught at the University of Helsinki as early as 1835, but the first Professor in the subject was appointed only in 1875. This was Otto Donner, the founder of the Finno-Ugrian Society (for the comparative study of the Finno-Ugric languages), and his successors include J. N. Reuter, G. J. Ramstedt (who taught Sanskrit in addition to his own field of study, Altaic linguistics) and Pentti Aalto. Nowadays South Asian Studies and Indo-European Studies are taught as two different fields of study, both actually rather wide-ranging, although (due to the scarcity of professorships) they still nominally form one subject.

Extractions: Ohio University is proud to host the national Summer Cooperative African Language Institute (SCALI) program during Summer 2004. The SCALI program offers intensive instruction in a variety of African languages for 4 hours per day for 7 weeks (140 hours total). This intensive institute will provide African language instruction with exposure to the culture and traditions associated with the chosen language. The classes will be taught by expert instructors and indigenous speakers of African languages. Students will earn a total of 12 credit hours for the programthe equivalent of a full year of language instruction. Non-credit options are also available. SCALI students will be exposed to a variety of African-centered activities at Ohio University during Summer 2004. The Institute for the African Child is planning to offer a variety of short courses and workshops throughout the summer on different African child research themes. SCALI students are eligible to enroll for one of these courses for no additional cost. The SCALI program also organizes several African-centered events throughout the summer, including lectures, plays, films, social gatherings, and field trips to African musical concerts and historical sites in Ohio. Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are available to support graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled in the SCALI program. The summer FLAS fellowships provide tuition and fees, a living stipend of $2,400, and optional travel grants. FLAS fellowships are supported by the U.S. Department of Education National Resource Centers for African Studies.
