Originally established as an academic division in October 1969, Black Studies (now African American and African Studies) obtained formal department status in 1972 and today enjoys the reputation of being one of the strongest African American and African Studies programs in the nation. The primary mission of the department is to stimulate teaching and research about the Black experience in the U.S., Africa and throughout the African diaspora, and to encourge students and others to assess various strategies for advancing human progress through the examination of the worldwide struggle for Black freedom. Extractions: The Department of African American Studies at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will begin first semester of the 2004-05 academic year, and will carry the rank of Associate Professor or higher. The primary responsibility of the incumbent will be to teach courses in Caribbean history. Candidates with a teaching competence in the cognate histories of the African diaspora (e.g. African American, Euro-African, Latin American, etc.) and its roots in Africa will be given preference. He or she will also be expected to participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising, service on committees, and sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position. Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree and a strong record of scholarship. Candidates must demonstrate interest in undergraduate teaching, and be possessed of significant evidence of successful teaching at the college level. At the same time, we seek applicants who have sufficient administrative experience or potential to be able to assume a leadership role in the department.
