Extractions: Linda Brown was a black girl attending fifth grade at the public schools in Topeka, Kansas. She was denied admission into a white elementary school. The NAACP took up her case, along with similar ones in Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia, and Delaware. All five cases were argued together in December, 1952 by Thurgood Marshall, a black lawyer who headed the NAACP. The entire nation was on its tiptoes waiting for the courts decision. On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court announced its decision that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." The decision effectively denied the legal basis for segregation in Kansas and 20 other states with segregated classrooms and would forever change race relations in the United States. NCSS Position Statements The books that appear in this annotated book list were evaluated and selected by a Book Review Committee appointed by National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and assembled in cooperation with the Children's Book Council (CBC). NCSS and CBC have cooperated on this annual bibliography since 1972. Books selected for this bibliography were published in 1997 and are written primarily for children in grades K-8. The selection committee looks for books that emphasize human relations, represent a diversity of groups and are sensitive to a broad range of cultural experiences, present an original theme or a fresh slant on a traditional topic, are easily readable and of high literary quality, and have a pleasing format and, when appropriate, illustrations that enrich the text. Each book is read by several reviewers, and books are included on the list by committee assent; annotations do not necessarily reflect the judgment of the entire committee.

Extractions: University of West Florida Libraries Traditionally, African-American Studies has focused on the history of Black people in the United States. However, as reflected in the following sources, African-American Studies is highly interdisciplinary, and seeks to acquaint students with trends, issues, and forces that have shaped the Black experience in America. At the same time, such factors as cultural adaptation, institutional development, and group self-definition are examined, while surveying the contemporary status and condition of African-Americans. Many of the following indexes and abstracts, although they are multidisciplinary in scope, contain a wealth of information germane to African-Americans.

This guide is not a comprehensive list of research materials, but it will give you an overview of the sources you should consider as you plan your research, as well as some starting places for different materials. Planning an effective research strategy will be essential to the success of your paper since many of the familiar legal research tools, such as annotated codes, legal encyclopedias and West key numbers will not provide access to the best research materials for these issues. Your research will be highly interdisciplinary in nature and may lead you to materials in social sciences, economics, sociology, history and public policy, as well as law. Empirical data, such as income, population and/or immigration statistics may be relevant to your research and analysis. The web sites listed in this guide under "Journal Abstracts and Indexes"
