She is the author of three books of poems, The Venus Hottentot Body of Life (1996), and Antebellum Dream Book (2001). Her collection of essays on African-American poetry, painting, and popular culture, The Black Interior , was published in 2004. Her poems, short stories, and critical prose have been widely published in such periodicals and journals as Signs American Literary History Callaloo The Paris Review American Poetry Review The Kenyon Review The Village Voice The Women's Review of Books , and in many anthologies. Her verse play, "Diva Studies," was produced at the Yale School of Drama in May 1996. Alexander has taught at the University of Chicago, where she won the Quantrell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, New York University’s Graduate Creative Writing Program, and Smith College, where she was Grace Hazard Conkling Poet-in-Residence, first director of the Poetry Center at Smith College, and member of the founding editorial collective for the feminist journal

America's demographic shifts have the potential to transform politics and culture as the number of non-Europeans grows in every major urban area. The African and African American Studies Program is interdisciplinary, drawing on the arts, humanities and social sciences. It offers a wide range of courses which explore the history, culture, politics and economics of people of African origin, particularly those who live in the United States, Africa, the Carribean, Central and South America. The AAAS Program presents new intellectual and cross-cultural enterprises, incorporating alternative historical reconstructions and formulating methodological, theoretical and analytical forms into the social sciences as well as the humanities. We sponsor lectures and workshops in collaboration with other departments and with the Multicultural Center for students and the community covering a variety of topics from international, national, state and commmunity politics to educational, social, cultural and economic issues.

Extractions: The Department of African and African American Studies offers a graduate program in the field of African American studies. The aim of this program is to combine an interdisciplinary training in African American cultural and social studies with a focus in a major disciplinary field, leading to the PhD in African American Studies. The program admits four or five students a year into a five- to six-year program. While there are no specific prerequisites, typically students either have undergraduate majors in African American studies, or have majors in fields such as anthropology, comparative literature, English, history, history of art, music, philosophy, sociology, and religious studies, and have done some undergraduate work in the field of African American studies. The fundamental rationale for the program is that there now exists a substantial body of scholarly writing on African American social, cultural, economic and political life and history, conducted by scholars with a primary training in a traditional discipline, who have drawn on the work of colleagues in other fields to enrich their work. This interdisciplinary corpus of scholarship is at the core of African American studies, and most serious work on African American literature, history, culture and social, economic or political life, proceeds with an awareness of this interdisciplinary background. There is, as a result, a fairly substantial tradition of writings and a lexicon of ideas that together define a core of knowledge in the field. Familiarity with this core at the graduate level is an important part of the training of those who work on these topics.
