Who's Who in AASD The African American Studies Department (AASD) at the University of Maryland fosters academic excellence in teaching and research on African-American life, history and culture. AASD's commitment to the development of intellectual growth for students and scholars accomplishes an equally important service for the African-American community as a whole: the quantitative analytical skills generic to social science research are put to use in the examination of the socio-economic problems confronting African-American communities in the United States. Scholarly examination of African-American communities helps illuminate the parallels, contradictions and strengths evident in all communities. Thus, while the specific subject matter of the program is African-American communities, the essential value of the program extends to studies of other cultures and communities around the world. The African American Studies faculty at UMCP is interdisciplinary and consists of a core faculty of anthropologists, sociologists, historians, and economists. The program also calls on faculty from other departments and colleges throughout the University. Much of the research conducted by the faculty is on the cutting edge of scholarship on the Black community. Members of the faculty consult with a variety of agencies and appear at national and international conferences and programs. They are known moreover for their commitment to working closely with students in the program and for helping them develop the skills and capabilities for tackling the social and economic issues facing the black and other minority communities.

Extractions: AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES ABOUT THE DEGREE PROGRAM The new multidisciplinary degree in African American studies, with a Minor in African Studies, is the first program of its kind in the Delmarva region. The course will give students the opportunity to acquire an objective view of Africa and the African Diaspora in the New World. It would expose students to multiple disciplines and adequately prepare them to compete in the global job market that is brought on by the increasing globalization of business and trade. The program should benefit students from the humanities, social sciences, as well as those headed towards professional studies. It will, also, prepare students for careers in the diplomatic service, Africa related services, state and local government and community-based agencies. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM The main objective of the degree program is to provide students the chance to acquire an objective view of Africa and the African diaspora in the United States, in seeing them gain an understanding of their historical, economic, social and political problems, and how these important issues are depicted in African/African American literature. The aim is to train and educate undergraduate students, and arm them with the necessary knowledge to continue to graduate school or enter the job market where a basic knowledge and understanding of African/African American problems are required.

Extractions: The African/African American Studies Program Program Description The program in African/African American Studies provides a cross cultural and comparative framework for systematically studying the traditions and experiences of Africans in the New and Old worlds. Students in this program are encouraged to develop their analytic, research and literary skills through a critical study of patterns of Western and African civilizations in their interwoven complexity. In addition to the courses offered by the program itself, several courses taught at Carleton have a bearing on African/African American studies. Students majoring in African/African American studies have been able to create their own individual programs out of the available Carleton offerings, independent study, and, in some cases, off-campus study. The program also offers a concentration option: in this case the study of the diaspora of African-derived peoples and cultures is rooted both in the mastery of a particular discipline (in the Social Sciences, Arts and Literature, or the Humanities, for example) and in relevant course work that is cross-cultural and interdisciplinary. In the context of Carleton College's commitment to liberal arts education, the program provides a forum for addressing topics such as cultural and artistic creativity, construction of self, marginality, responses to exclusion, and the conjunction of issues related to gender, class, race, and ethnicity.
