In one semester, it would be impossible to adequately explore the richness and complexity of the African American Literary tradition in sufficient depth. For example, we could easily spend a semester on the Slave Narrative, or the Harlem Renaissance, or on a single author such as Toni Morrison. This course, rather, will serve as an introduction to African American literature, and we will consider various authors (storytellers, novelists, poets, dramatist, filmmakers, musicians, and essayists) representing the vernacular tradition, the literature of slavery and freedom, the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, contemporary literature and independent film. Many wonderful authors will be left out, but students will have the opportunity to explore a particular author or period in more depth in their final papers. See daily schedule This course may be used in the Aesthetic and Humanistic Inquiry distribution block in the Liberal Studies Program. This particular course, because of its focus on African American Literature, has as its thematic focus Valuing the Diversity of Human Experience.

Chesnutt (1980), deals with a seminal figure in the development of African American and Southern American prose fiction.
