Extractions: The object of these lessons is to increase aerobic fitness and also use music to develop patterns of movement and dance. In British Columbia, we have a wonderful program called "Jump Rope For Heart", which is a part of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The activities described lead to a whole-school event day when teams of mixed grades try to jump for a total of one hour. We raise funds for this society. However, the activities are good for just plain fitness!

Introduction by Diana Adams Manipulative Rope Jumping (p. 256) To begin with, each student will be provided with a jump rope. When the whistle is blown and the music begins, the students will run around the gym with their ropes. When the whistle is blown again, the children will begin rope jumping in their own individual patterns. After the whistle is blown again, students will drop their jump ropes and begin jumping over as many ropes as they can, one at a time. Each time the whistle is blown, the students will switch between rope jumping and jumping over the ropes on the floor. II. Fitness by Diana Adams

Site Map Design and Implement a Personal Fitness Plan Overview: The NASPE national standards in physical education indicate a need for "students to exhibit a physically active lifestyle" and understand that "physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction." The goal of education is to facilitate a learning environment that encourages learning for all and provides opportunities for students to engage in, apply, synthesize and evaluate ones learning. The goal of the physical educator is to provide an avenue for students to participate in and establish lifetime health and fitness habits and goals. Once the teacher has provided instruction in a fitness center on the FITT principle, components of fitness, overload principle, specificity, safety and proper technique of all equipment, motivational and monitoring techniques and strategies, it is time to move from guided practice to independent practice. The overall goal is having all students through self - evaluation, create and implement a personal fitness plan to be carried out over ten physical education classes. Estimated Time: This unit is approximately 12 - 15 classes. Students will need to know proper technique and safety of all fitness room equipment prior to the unit of designing and implementing a fitness plan to be recorded in a journal over ten class periods.

Extractions: Programs such as Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers are quite popular, but they are not necessarily better than other programs such as Richard Simmons (Deal-a-Meal) or Suzanne Somers. All of these programs have their negative aspects. The Cabbage Soup craze has gained popularity in recent times by promising fat loss via eating soup all day long, specifically soup made from cabbage. However, this Cabbage diet also has its negative aspects since it is not a very tasty menu to follow. There are people who try using laxatives and other diuretics for the purpose of losing excess weight, but this just doesn't work because these pills only help to drain excess fluid from your body, and that's only a temporary loss of water weight on the scale. Using laxatives or diuretics is not the solution to serious weight loss, it doesn't result in any real loss of weight other than merely a loss of water weight, and that's all. There are various forms of weight loss surgery to get rid of excess fat tissue and cellulite, one of these forms of surgery is called liposuction (lipo surgery). We don't recommend using any form of surgery to get rid of cellulite or excess fat tissue, instead it is simply healthier to lose the excess weight naturally via a smart eating program. We do not recommend liposuction, because lipo surgery is not a healthy way to lose the weight.

There are many popular fat burning products and pills such as Phentermine, Meridia, Xenical, Adipex, Bontril, and Ionamin (as well as others such as Chromium Picolinate and Chitosan). Some of these are prescription pills and some are over the counter, some of these diet pills work effectively and some do not. Therefore it's important to choose the correct product for weight management since there are many different options and alternatives. There are many popular fad dieting programs being used today, such as the Dr. Atkins low carb plan, the Cabbage Soup program, the Caveman (Paleolithic) dieting plan, the South Beach program, the Hollywood 48 hour miracle diet, the Zone diet (Enter the Zone by Barry Sears), and many others. Most of these diets do not work very well because they are based on unrealistic menus and portions which "sound" good before you begin, but which quickly become unbearable just days into the program. Fitness and nutrition programs are always easier to follow when they are based on realistic tolerance levels.

Extractions: In This Lesson This lesson introduces students to the topic of "Cycling Smart," that is, using their heads to plan ahead for the decisions and choices they will face in cycling. One focus is for students to develop a repertoire of strategies that help them to avoid and/or appropriately respond to the hazards and dangers cyclists commonly face in their community. Another focus is on instructing students how to use peripheral vision and read the facial expressions and other non-verbal cues of those with whom they share the road. Jumping rope is the physical activity used to reinforce the importance of these strategies and provide practice in using them.
