In this lesson we will focus on the recovery of the heart after the stress of exercise. In general, people with a higher level of fitness have a faster drop in their heart rate from the effort of exercise than people who are not fit. When fitness professionals are assessing recovery heart rate the recovery rate is, typically, measured for one to two minutes after the end of the exertion. Complete Recovery Heart Rate is the time between when you stop exercising and the time it takes for your heart rate to return to the pre-exercise level. Complete Recovery Heart Rate may require as long as an hour after the end of the exertion. In addition to the role played by becoming more fit we can mindful recovery to improve, to some extent, the rate at which the body recovers from the stress of exertion. In other words, we can use mental biofeedback to consciously regulate our recovery rate. Mindful recovery is an excellent skill to develop to deal with stressful situations. Mindful recovery involves visualization, deep (abdominal) breathing, comfortable body positioning and the use of other relaxation techniques to purposefully lower your heart rate as rapidly as possible. With practice students can develop their own coping strategies for managing their heart rate and their stress level in a variety of situations.
