Medical Issues In Adoption KidsHealth Parents Positive Parenting Family Life Medical issues in adoption. Being an adoptive parent can be extremely rewarding. http://kidshealth.org/parent/positive/family/medical_adopt.html
Extractions: Being an adoptive parent can be extremely rewarding. And although all parents have concerns about their child's health, adoptive parents may have some special worries. That's why being an active participant in your child's health care is just as important for the adoptive parent as for the biologic one. Gathering Information Before You Adopt If you have an open or semi-open adoption - one where you meet the mother and sometimes the father - you should be able to get substantial health information. In an open independent adoption, you may help arrange the birth mother's prenatal care , go with her on doctor visits, and be present for the birth. You can also ask for health records through the agency or attorney who is arranging the adoption. With an older child living in this country, you may be able to evaluate health issues by spending time with him over weeks or months or by serving as a foster parent before adopting him. With international adoptions, you are likely to get a picture and perhaps a short video of the child, but health and family information may be scanty or unreliable. If you can afford it, it may be worth making a trip to meet the child before deciding to adopt him, especially if the child is older than 2 or 3 years. Before you adopt, it can help to have as much medical information as possible, such as:

(A number of the terms used in this article are defined in Agricultural Biotechnology Concepts and Definitions ). U.S. acreage using genetically engineered crops has increased from about 8 million acres in 1996 to more than 67 million acres in 1998, in major states where data have been collected. Has adoption of this technology benefited farmers and the environment? Answering this question is not easy, even though survey data have been collected on the characteristics and performance of farms adopting biotech crops. Attributing differences in yields, pesticide use, and profits between adopters and nonadopters observed in the data solely to adoption of genetically engineered crops is nearly impossible because many other factors also affect yield and pesticide use. For example, producers with more favorable soils and climate may have higher yields than those operating under less favorable conditions, whether they used herbicide-tolerant varieties or not. Producers in areas of greater pest pressure may use more pesticide applications than those with fewer pest problems, despite adopting

Extractions: Overview of Lesbian and Gay Parenting, Adoption and Foster Care April 6, 1999 The last decade has seen a sharp rise in the number of lesbians and gay men forming their own families through adoption, foster care, artificial insemination and other means. Researchers estimate that the total number of children nationwide living with at least one gay parent ranges from six to 14 million. At the same time, the United States is facing a critical shortage of adoptive and foster parents. As a result, hundreds of thousands of children in this country are without permanent homes. These children languish for months, even years, within state foster care systems that lack qualified foster parents and are frequently riddled with other problems. In Arkansas, for example, the foster care system does such a poor job of caring for children that it has been placed under court supervision. Legal and Policy Overview of Lesbian and Gay Parenting Many states have moved to safeguard the interests of children with gay or lesbian parents. For example, at least 21 states have granted second-parent adoptions to lesbian and gay couples, ensuring that their children can enjoy the benefits of having two legal parents, especially if one of the parents dies or becomes incapacitated.
