Understanding Childhood Disease Pamphlet identifying common childhood disorders such as mood, anziety, add/adhd, and autisim. http://hcpc.uth.tmc.edu/childhooddisorders.htm
Extractions: B ecause of the seemingly carefree nature of their lives, children have been thought not to suffer from mental and emotional disorders. However, studies have indicated that children do, in fact, suffer from disorders typically thought to occur only in adults. Learning and conduct disorders, substance abuse, conditions such as autism and depression, and suicide are common in our young population. When children develop mental or emotional disorders, parents often blame themselves. But childhood disorders are likely caused by a combination of many factors. It is important to recognize the problem and seek treatment as soon as possible. Often these conditions can be treated effectively, allowing our children to grow into happy, productive adults. Recognizing and understanding some of the disorders common in children is the first step. Major depression, manic depressive disorder (also called bipolar disorder) and mania are disorders which cause change in a child's mood. Depression is considered to be the most common mental disorder. It is often mistaken for "the blues" and therefore goes untreated. Depression is caused by a number of factors, from chemical imbalances to environmental influences to genetics. Major depression causes people to feel hopeless, exhausted and useless. More than changes in mood, major depression can cause problems with sleep, appetite, self-esteem, daily activities and physical health.
Extractions: NewIdeas.Net ADD ADHD: Reticular Activating System Neurological Issues with ADD/ADHD Discussed What is happening in the brain to cause this problem that we call ADD? The most recent models which attempt to describe what is happening in the brains of people with ADD suggest that several areas of the brain may be affected by the disorder. They include the frontal lobes , the inhibitory mechanismsof the cortex , the limbic system , and the reticular activating system . Each of these areas of the brain are associated with various functions. The Frontal Lobes The frontal lobes help us to pay attention to tasks, focus concentration, make good decisions, plan ahead, learn and remember what we have learned, and behave appropriately for the situation. Inhibitory Mechanisms The inhibitory mechanisms of the cortex keep us from being hyperactive, from saying things out of turn, and from getting mad at inappropriate times, for examples. They help us to inhibit our behaviors. Ive heard it said that 70% of the brain is there to inhibit the other 30% of the brain. When the inhibitory mechanisms of the brain arent working as hard as they ought to, then we can see results of what are sometimes called disinhibition disorders such as impulsive behaviors, quick temper, poor decision making, hyperactivity, and so on.

(I hope I have helped fill it a little!)
Learning Disabilities OnLine: LD In-Depth: Section 504 & IDEA: Basic Similaritie Articles relating to attention deficit disorder, including an introduction to the subject, the legal rights of parents and children, classroom techniques for teachers and students, and effective parenting. http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/legal_legislative/edlaw504.html
Extractions: Although parents of children with disabilities are frequently more familiar with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), they should also acquaint themselves with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (hereinafter "Section 504"). Knowledge of both statutes, and particularly their implementing regulations, often is necessary to be sure of securing an appropriate education for children with disabilities. Indeed, for some children with disabilities, Section 504 may be more important the only legal mandate requiring education agencies to provide special education or related services to a child with a disability. This article will familiarize parents with why and how Section 504 impacts the education of children with disabilities; illustrate some of the differences between Section 504 and IDEA; and provide a basic explanation of "how Section 504 works." It is vital to remember, however, that literally volumes have been written on these topics and, therefore, no one should rely solely on this article to undertake legal action. A suitable next step in the learning process might be review of RIGHTS OF PHYSICALLY HANDICAPPED PERSONS (Shepard's/McGraw-Hill, Colorado Springs, Colorado: 1984), a concise but very sophisticated explanation of this area by Professor Laura F. Rothstein of the University of Houston School of Law.

Tips For The Teacher From The adhd Owner's Manual, tips for teachers who are teaching children diagnosed with add/adhd. http://www.edutechsbs.com/adhd/00037.htm
Extractions: Consistency is the key to helping ADHD children. They are really poor at dealing with change, even if it is positive change. They need to have a sense of external structure, as they tend to lack a sense of internal structure. 2. ADHD kids have two kinds of time...plenty and none . They are usually poor at organizing their time and need you to help them break tasks down into small components. 3. Placing ADHD kids at the front of the room ( nearest the blackboard or where the teacher gives instruction ) is often helpful. If the child is right handed, placing them at the right front of the class minimizes the number of children they watch wiggle when they write. 4. Try to avoid placing ADHD children in loft classrooms or in situations with multiple children at a single desk. This maximizes their distractability. 5. Use colors and shapes to help them organize. 6. Try to provide a quiet study area, free from distraction , when seat work is required. 7. Try to work within the child's attention span . Keep changing the type of work frequently and the child can continue to work productively. Medication is NOT the only solution. 8.Remember

Review: ADHD Stimulants For Children. General and specific discussion of several stimulants, includin Ritalin, Adderall, and Concerta. http://www.adhdhelp.org/stimulants.htm
Extractions: Since 1991 prescriptions for all drugs to treat ADHD have quintupled. This year about six million children, roughly one child out of every eight, will take Ritalin or other forms of methylphenidate. The number of stimulants prescribed for children 2 to 4 has increased 200% to 300% between 1991 and 1995. Studies show that stimulants cause especially severe reactions in young children. Since there are no good studies, no one knows what it does to the development of the very young child's brain. First it is important to realize that all of the stimulant drugs prescribed for ADHD/ADD are closely related to some illegal street drugs. These include dextroamphetamine (dexedrine) (street name: "dexies"), methamphetamine (street name: "crystal meth"), and, of course, cocaine. We imprison people for making drugs very similar to the drugs we prescribe to our ADHD children.
Ritalin Is Child Abuse Information on the use of Ritalin on school children; side effects and evidence of overmedication; tips for parents on how to tell if their child needs Ritalin and how they can help their child handle the symptoms for which they have been prescribed the drug. http://www.scn.org/~bk269/r-ball.html
Extractions: There are a number of people who clearly have ADHD or the equivalent to the extent of not being able to adequately function in life. This article is not intended to dismiss the use of Ritalin in all cases. If your child is in that category (or if you are in that category), I'm sure you won't be dissuaded in any case. You'll probably also agree that the drug is being grossly overprescribed to those who do not require drug therapy! Ritalin is a tradename for Methylphenidate hydrochloride, an antidepressant stimulant. There is no generic common name for the drug. Other antidepressant stimulants are real cocaine, novocaine, other cocaine substitutes. Ritalin is not a classic antidepressant in the sense of Prosaic. Street names for Methylphenidate hydrochloride are "r-ball" and "vitamin r." While children are the obvious victims here, the same message applies to adults. If you are the student, please excuse the third party ("your child") language. The message is the same!

This author believes the critical need for patients (via hopefully corporate or private funding sources) is to accelerate steps that will "jump-start" controlled therapies, while our medical establishment searches for all the scientific answers.

Extractions: TOP OF PAGE Introduction Welcome to ADHDSOS : AD/HD Coaching AD/HD Coaching has recently received a great deal of attention. The simple reason for that is that it works! An estimated 17-20 million American's quality of life is hampered by AD/HD. This does not take into account the countless people's lives impacted by the individual diagnosed with AD/HD. I use the coaching process to assist those mentioned above to understand their complex nature of their own AD/HD. I help people understand the "how and why" of their procrastination and inability to only apply themselves to their potential. Coaching is a process of identifying their strengths. Or as my coach and trainer David Giwerc, Master Certified Coach says "gives people with AD/HD who have experienced setbacks or failures permission to proceed."
