We'd consider any area, from the Peninsula to Marin to east Contra Costa county. Thanks, Mom of Soon-to-be Kindergartner I would suggest that you contact a support group for the type of disability your child has. Family Resource Network, an offshoot of Bananas, has an office and newsletter that can connect you with other parents dealing with the same issues. Their phone number is (510) 547-7322. I have a 13-year old son with Asperger's syndrome and I gave up on public education 4 years ago. However, every disability is different just as every child is different and you have to do what you feel is right for your child. Good luck. Nancy

Zan was created by a mother of a severly learning disabled son, who suffered from ADD as well as other issues. In 1993, her frustrated research into Ritalin alternatives yielded unsuccessful results. She proceeded to experiment with herbs and antioxidants on her son, until she felt that she had discovered the perfect combination that allowed her son relief from his symptoms. She conducted a longitudenal study, in 1998, on 37 people representing all weights and ages. The succeesful data results from her study encouraged her to file for a patent, manufacture and market her product under the Zan label. Extractions: "Every year the National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY) receives thousands of requests for information about the education and special needs of children and youth with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). Over the past several years, ADD has received a tremendous amount of attention from parents, professionals and policymakers across the country so much so, in fact, that nearly everyone has now heard about ADD or ADHD. While helpful to those challenged by this disability, such widespread recognition creates the possibility of improper diagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Now, more than ever, parents who suspect their child might have ADD or ADHD and parents of children who have already been diagnosed with the disorder need to evaluate information, products, and practitioners carefully." National Information Center for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (add-adhd, ADHD, AD/HD) is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in both children and adults. Many of these individuals were previously labeled hyperactive or minimally brain damaged. According to the American Psychiatric Association, it is estimated that there are approximately 1.6 to 2 million people who have this disorder.

Extractions: BEACH BALL PRACTICE ACTIVITIES GRADES: 1-7 Students with disabilities often need more practice than other students to master skills. Using a "programmed" beach ball is a fun way to fit drill and practice in without boring the kids. This idea was shared with me at a math workshop I attended last summer. Blow up the beach ball and hold it with the air hole facing upward. Beach balls are already nicely sectioned (kind of like an orange). So, all you have to do next is draw lines horizontally with a permanent marking pen to create several little boxes on your beach ball. Program the boxes with various information that students need to practice (ideas follow). Some Ideas: In each box, write a number from one to nine. Throw the ball to students and ask them what numbers their thumbs are on. When they tell you, ask them to either add, subtract, multiply or divide. This is an easy activity to individualize because you can ask different students to do different things with the numbers. I also found that it helps students with mathematics vocabulary. (Some of my students always say "take away" or "times" rather than the proper vocabulary). You could even say "find the product" to further reinforce vocabulary.

Extractions: Many people have difficulty comprehending that a child can be gifted and also have learning disabilities. As a result, children with special needs that result from both their high abilities and their learning problems are rarely identified and are often poorly served. This article explores the current policies and practices with regard to defining, identifying, and educating this population. Recommendations are included that would help ensure that students who are gifted and have learning disabilities receive the intervention needed to help them achieve their full potential. When educators first began describing children who showed evidence of having a learning disability (LD) yet also appeared to be gifted, many viewed this as contradictory. The stereotype that had prevailed since Terman's (1925) time was that gifted children score uniformly high on intelligence tests and perform well in school. How could a child be considered gifted who has serious enough learning problems to be characterized as having a learning disability? In recent years, the concept of giftedness and learning disabilities occurring concomitantly in the same individual has become commonly accepted. Several books have been written on the subject, numerous articles have appeared in journals, and most educational conferences focusing on either learning disabilities or giftedness include at least one presentation on the dual exceptionality. We appear to have reached an understanding that high ability and learning problems can both be present in the same individual. Nonetheless, empirical research on the characteristics and needs of this population has been limited, and relatively few students with LD who are gifted are identified as such or given special services. In this review, we examine some of the theoretical arguments, regulations, and educational practices that affect students with LD who are gifted.

Extractions: What is Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder or ADHD? Here is some general information about ADHD/ADD. ADHD usually lasts your whole life. A lot of adults have ADHD. Experts think that ADHD is probably caused by differences in the way messages are sent in the brain. ADHD seems to run in families, so it may be inherited. The best treatment for ADHD is usually medication, often combined with behavior therapy (including training parents in behavior therapy) and setting things up for your child at home and at school to make it easier to pay attention ADHD and learning disabilities are two very different kinds of challenges. But they often do come together.
