E-mail to: aludwig@silcom.com Physics books [e.g. Feynman , and Landau and Lifshitz ] typically discuss the molecular nature of sound, but then derive the sound wave equations by modeling air as a continuous elastic medium (i.e. no lumpy molecules). Mathematically this is just fine, but I find it much more satisfying to derive the wave equations directly from the molecular point of view. I also think this is a more straightforward derivation, since it completely avoids any need to deal with "specific heat ratios" or "adiabatic processes." The effects associated with these terms arise quite naturally directly from the molecular model. This is a rather technical section, and assumes familiarity with calculus, differential equations, and statistics. There is an equation-free description of the physics of sound in the

     Extractions: The Ocean Acoustics Department focuses on the propagation and scattering of sound in the ocean using theory and numerical modeling backed by ocean experiment. We study the effects of variability in the ocean environment on sound, the so-called "forward" ocean acoustics problem, and we exploit our understanding to solve the so-called "inverse" acoustical oceanography problem, where sound is used as a probe to study the ocean environment itself. Research spans the frequency range from a few Hertz to hundreds of kilohertz. Department staff comprises acousticians who focus on the ocean acoustics problem, acousticians who collaborate with oceanographers to develop acoustical oceanography techniques, and oceanographers who use acoustics for their research.

     Extractions: The "canceling circles" algorithm: As an explenation to a color intensity illusion This article describes a new algorithm for super fast pitch detection and pitch detection in noisy waves in speech and music sound waves. It employs a new two-dimensional filter of canceling circles for recognition of main points in the sound wave. Following, it is possible to apply two-dimensional distance measurement for estimating difference between repeating similar segments. The result of this algorithm is a rapid and accurate method of recognition of pitch. Further, it is demonstrated that the "canceling circles" mechanism can explain some audio-visual illusions and therefore possibly is a biologically oriented algorithm. This is a description of a new algorithm for super fast pitch detection of pitche and pitch detection in noisy speech waves. The algorithm is applicable for other waves with repeating segments, as well as visual repeating patterns. It makes use of a new two-dimensional filter of canceling circles for recognition of main points in the sound wave. Another innovation employed is proceeding by using two-dimensional distance measurement for estimating difference between repeating similar segments, unlike the similar correlation methods of AMDF and autocorrelation [1].
