Few ideas have more 'revolutionary' implications than computer-supported self-directed learning. (Remember that a previous technological innovation, the printing press, was the sine qua non for all the democratic revolutions of the 18th Century!) Why didn't they teach me this at school?! The established educational system is limited to preparing the individual for employment rather than life as a whole. Even many adult education facilities have that orientation, so that often one thinks, "Why didn't they teach me this at school?" or "Where can I go to learn about this?" So many things one needs to know in life, or which could greatly enhance one's life, are not easily accessible, and while the information is very often available on the Internet, many people are lost in its vast and chaotic space. Below is a list of topics about which I feel many people are inadequately informed. Each page has some links ready for you to check out, and search facilities for your further research...

Extractions: The principal and teachers at George Clymer School, a large urban elementary school, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania established an instructional team to form smaller learning communities within the school. The school is located in an area of the city beset with high crime and high drug activity within the community. The school serves 800 Pre-K to Grade 5 students who are predominately, "at-risk" and limited English proficient, with 96% of them on ATDC. Over a period of six months, the faculty researched and discussed the concept of small communities. The project was launched in September 1995 with four small communities - three instructional and one support. The philosophy of the small learning communities is child-centered, direct instructional-focused, literacy based, and family oriented. Teachers in each community share with each other, meet frequently to plan and assess, and engage in collaborative activities. Camaraderie has developed amongst teachers and students in each community. Higher student achievement is indicated by scores on the Silveroli Reading Assessment, report card grades, SAT-9 scores and the PA Assessment Test. The climate of the school is positive and supported by the decrease in the number of absences recorded for the staff and the increase in the daily student attendance. The average daily attendance for students is 91%, and for the staff it is 99%. Discipline has improved drastically as evidenced by a reduction of 75% in the number of student discipline referrrals.

Our company is one which seems to deal with a lot of Chinese tourist and clients, what do you suggest we do to provide better customer service? Chinese is often perceived as a 'difficult' language to learn. This is probably due to the tonal nature of spoken Chinese and that the Chinese written script is based on pictographs or characters. However, learning Chinese is actually easier in some respects than learning English - with Chinese, there are no conjugations, no declensions, no different suffixes or prefixes according to singular or plural numbers, gender, tenses as in past, present or future etc. Therefore, grammar is a lot easier with Chinese.

FAQ Australasian Centre of Chinese Studies (School of Chinese Languages in Melbourne and Sydney) Chinese using Accelerated Learning A 10-week course of 2 hours each week full of fun and rapid learning. What Students will Learn In this course participants will be taught how to write the commonly used Chinese radicals which still form the basis of modern Chinese writing. By mastering these radicals students will learn other ideographs more easily and how to use a Chinese/English dictionary more quickly. Students will also learn to converse in everyday situations. The approach used to teach writing reading and conversing is based wholly on accelerated learning principles. Chinese Writing Chinese writing has no alphabetical order therefore it is difficult to remember the ideographs through memorisation, since there are no sequential links connecting them. There are 214 elementary pictographs that form the basis of Chinese writing. These pictographs originated literally from pictures drawn of objects, animals, phenomena of nature etc. These pictures have changed over the years but many can be identified from their original representations eg. The word for "human being" is: These pictographs evolved over the centuries of Chinese civilisation into symbols that stand for abstract ideas. Thus simple pictographs evolved further into ideographs. Gradually ideographs were combined with a kind of phonetic script to make new words. The Chinese language is constantly evolving and there is an infinite number of words that can emerge through the combinations of the 214 elementary pictographs called 'Chinese radicals'. Alternatively a new word can be formed by combining two or more radicals. And this is only the beginning. Such is the genius of Chinese writing.
Extractions: Search: In the NLP community there are three levels of certification, Practitioner, Master Practitioner and Trainer of NLP. In the last few years some organisations have added a Master Trainer certification. To be certified as a Practitioner of NLP an NLP student needed to attend between 20 and 24 days of training. For Master Practitioner an additional 20 days were required and at least 15 days with an apprenticeship period for trainer certification. In recent years some training organisations have begun to hold short 7 day NLP trainings marketed as "practitioner" certification training. There is a number of myths espoused in their marketing of these short change training programs. Here are some of the myths of the 7 day "accelerated Practitioner" trainings. The unstated subtext they are implying is that trainers of full length Practitioner trainings don't use NLP to teach NLP! By its very nature NLP is a technology that when used effectively produces accelerated learning.
Extractions: Body Abstract Northwest Missouri State University has embarked on a project to promote accelerated learning, the modularization of courses, and the integration of information technology in appropriate courses. This project is focusing on how to reconfigure courses into modules, which will enhance the learning process and allow learners the opportunity to enter the curriculum at a point appropriate to their prior knowledge and actively pursue their learning at a time, place, and style that suits them best. Body Information and knowledge are two of the most important elements in our work and daily lives. Our world of information is changing so rapidly that a need for a paradigm shift in the way we teach and learn arises. This paradigm shift not only includes the formal kind of learning traditionally taught in classrooms, but also involves the needs associated with lifelong learning such as learning on the job, learning from others, learning constantly, learning in any place, and at any time. By evolving courses to an accelerated modular format and using both synchronous and asynchronous learning, both of these domains may be encompassed. Such a move not only contributes to a new kind of education, but also to empowering students to become self-directed, lifelong learners.
