Extractions: Ambient World What is the worst hell imaginable? It's possibly the hell that is the closest to our experience, the one that's made from the bits and pieces of our everyday reality. Alfred Hitchcock understood this principle, finding the deepest terror in the most mundane things, be they birds, or motels, or high places. Jack Womack builds his horrific dystopia in Ambient in much the same way. He chooses capitalism as his mundane axis, about which circles a truly terrible world. His protaganist, O'Malley, is a corporate bodyguard in a 21st century New York with a third world division of wealth, power, and security. A massive economic dislocation, the Big One, has concentrated everything in the hands of a tiny wealthy elite. The rest of the population are either the servants of the rich, or nobodies with nothing. Or, they're Ambients. A radioactive disaster has created a mutant, mutilated group of survivors, who are emulated by a gothic, metaphysical sect known as Ambients. Womack builds a kind of Sharks and Jets polarity between the Ambients and the business sector. Their differences are richly exposed in Womack's use of language and dialect, the multi-layered metaphor-speak of the Ambients, and the clipped, stripped-down bizspeak of the wealthy. In between these two groups are everyone else, the people with very little, and the army of occupation which rules the streets with terror. To ice the cake, a "forever war" is being fought with the Russians. There is no good news.

Extractions: Very Ambient Jack Womack has looked into this Abyss and returned with visions of a future both horrific and horribly plausible. Biochemical holocaust and armed rebellion on Long Island; water, food, and air poisoned and poisoning the majority who have no other sustenance; thugs and soldiers shooting it out in the streets of Manhattan; all form the backdrop of Womack's dark future. At centerstage is the Dryden Corporation - Dryco - where absolute power rests in the hands of the absolutely corrupt. Worry not, wonder not is the motto that underscores the Dryco smiley face logo, a.k.a. the Smirker. Company practice is profit and power at any cost, humanity no object. Dryco's owners, the Drydens, are ruthless, amoral, and deranged. Risen from humble two-bit drug lord beginnings, they now command the puppet US government, the national armed forces, and the remaining business infrastructure. Those who don't bend to the Dryco will are cast into the gutters with the rest of the poverty stricken population, doomed to suffer first-hand the ravages of the new Dryco order.

Readers need look no farther than Jack Womack's 'Random Acts of Senseless Violence' for an excellent and enjoyable example of a child's guide to the apocalypse. More than most forms, the child's voice demands a strong and consistent level of prose writing. It might sound easy, but it is in fact very difficult. Womack is more than up to the challenge. His page-turning 1994 novel effectively uses the voice of Lola Hart, a 12-year old girl living with her nuclear family in New York City, to lend his catastrophic vision a timeless quality. Even better, he manages to make his faux memoir a propulsive reading experience. As he rends the reader's heart, Womack keeps the pages turning. It's a remarkable piece of fiction. The voice of Lola Hart is the cornerstone of this novel, and Womack's prose skills enable him to create a large cast of vivid characters. Lola's father is a writer who is forced to take employment in a large bookstore. Lola's mother is Prozac casualty who nonetheless loves her children; her sister, whom she affectionately calls 'Boob' is a traumatized child who might not make it out of the gate. Womack manages to convey a world of subtlety through Lola's unintentional observations. The nuances of family life come alive in a complex texture of words. Lola's language suggests lots of details to the reader that Lola herself does not comprehend. Womack doesn't overplay this oft-used technique. Instead he wields it with great precision in a fashion that is extremely pleasurable to read.

Extractions: a reflection on the novel elvissey by jack womack In the year 2033, millions of people will worship a man who inspired intense devotion during his lifetime, a man some believe never truly died, and whose followers will cry out, begging him to return. That man is Elvis Presley, and his worshippers are the Elvii. Now, if you think a science-fiction novel about Elvis-worship sounds like an inherently comic venture, let me clear that up. There is a dark humor at times in Jack Womack's 1993 novel Elvissey , but this novel plays its situations straight. It's a violent, exciting, challenging, brilliant and tragic work. The Dryco Corporation, represented by an ubiquitous smiley-face logo, has much of the world's population in its grip. Those who worship Elvis, however, seem largely impervious to Dryco's machinations. In an attempt to ensnare the followers of Elvis, Dryco launches a desperate plan to deliver unto them their messiah. Dryco agent Isabel Bonney and her husband John must venture through a cosmic rift to an alternate 1954 in which swastika-adorned German flying saucers hover over around Tennessee and black America seems utterly, eerily nonexistent. Their mission is to kidnap that world's Elvis, if he even exists, and return him to Dryco, where he will become part of their plan to manipulate the Elvii.

Extractions: First published 1993 I will break with my usual habit and start this review with a plot summary. Its the year 2033 and the population of New York is joining the C of E in a big way. The C of E - the Church of Elvis of course. But the Elvii are splintering into sects such as the Hosts of Memphis and the Shaken, Rattled and Rolled. Global corporation Dryco send their operative back to 1954 to bring Elvis back to his adoring millions. But the 1954 she finds is a little different with 80 lane highways, mysterious flying saucers and an Elvis that never recorded and who has just killed his ma... The above is essentially the contents of the back cover, but it is a fairly accurate synopsis of the plot. At this stage you might well think that a Josh Kirby cover is in order and that this might be a nice light read for the beach. Of course, you have probably already worked out that this is not the case. There is humour in this novel but its all of the black variety. Elvissy is a very intense personal and political drama set in a rather nasty future. It is in fact a rather extreme example of why I do not consider a plot summary a very useful review device. As for the merits of the book - its not the easiest of reads. Womack has devised an English variant to represent the language of forty years hence. It is easy enough to understand, but the translation process that is required disrupts the flow somewhat. I'm not sure if it is because of, or despite this that the writing is both descriptive and very powerful. On a paragraph by paragraph basis, this is a superb book with great characters and detailed wild images. Taken in larger chunks it does not hang together quite so well. Perhaps its the language, or deficiencies in plot structure or maybe its just the amount of energy that you have to expend to read it.
