Extractions: Universally known as H.G. Wells, he was one of the most popular and widely known authors of his time. This was partly the result of the amazingly wide variety of his interests and subject matter, and although he is perhaps most widely known nowadays as a pioneer of science fiction he is still also celebrated as a (sometimes comic) observer of the English. Wells was born in Kent. His father is variously described as a failed shopkeeper and professional cricketer, and he himself after an unsuccessful spell as an apprentice draper became first a student teacher in Midhurst and eventually, by dint of various scholarships, made his way to the Normal School of Science in South Kensington (now part of one of Britain's leading scientific institutions, Imperial College). In the Normal School he was taught by, among others, the distinguished biologist T.H. Huxley. The struggles of his early years provide the background of his semi-autobiographical comic novels such as 'Love And Mr. Lewisham' (1900), 'Kipps' (1905) and 'The History Of Mr Polly' (1910). To some extent such works were also attempts at social commentary, and his interest in contemporary political issues also inspired such novels as 'Ann Veronica' (1909) dealing with feminist issues and 'Tono Bungay' (also 1909) dealing with the power of modern advertising. He continued to display his political enthusiasms as a member of the Fabian Society, then the major intellectual wing of the Labour party, along with colleagues such as

Extractions: books, movies, ideas - for the unversed Herbert George Wells had a lot of peculiar ideas. That is, they seemed unusual at the time. He both practiced and wrote about sexual freedom. He thought a lot about the future and society. A trained scientist, he wrote thought provoking science fiction that explored the impact of technology on society but also provided readers with rattling good yarns. He produced a highly successful history book. He wrote conventional novels about the aspirations of the lower-middle class from which he came. He sincerely wanted to change the world.
