Mallory . [The silver in the photo at left prevents the detail of the stripes from scanning properly.] After discussing the photo album with my aunt, we concluded that the album really belonged to my grandmother, Millie, who also wrote the captions. This belief is based on 3 things: 1) the captions are in her handwriting; 2) the pictures are not in any meaningful order; 3) most of the captions are in quotation marks, leading me to believe she asked Virgil and quoted his answer. As I said, you can jump to a photo directly from this page, or navigate to an image map and browse just like a regular photo album. Have fun. Virgil is known for his epic, the Aeneid (written about 29 B.C.E., unfinished), which had taken its literary model from Homer's epic poems Iliad and Odyssey . The tale depicts Aeneas's homeseeking and his war to found a city. The archetypical character has given much later model to Western heroes familiar from the books of Owen Wister and Louis L'Amour. Extractions: (they are below the text but click if you can't wait) a couple years ago i bought a small metal rectangle, about 6"x9", that had been enameled in an abstract pattern. the process of enamel on metal requires ground glass placed on the field and then all heated up to about 1500 degrees in a kiln, where the ground glass changes and fuses with the metal in colors and designs unseen sometimes. the small piece i bought was dated 1963 and signed Cantini. since theday i bought it, it has bothered me for some reason that i didn't know the artist. finally, yesterday i did a search on info space and discovered a Virgil Cantini in the city and he had been an artist at Carnegie tech ( now carnegie mellon)! the phone was listed so, last night around 8:30, i called.
