    Extractions: The award is named for May Swenson, a 20th century American who wrote poetry for more than 50 years, Bishop explained. She said each year the judge is a different American poet, who selects the winning manuscript from more than 800 submissions. The award was especially meaningful to Bishop because she has long admired the work of 2003 judge Alicia Ostriker. USU Press published Bishop's winning manuscript this summer and Ostriker wrote the foreword. Ostriker described Bishops work as "deeply personal, extravagantly public art." Bishop said poetry first became part of her life through school. "I wrote my first poem in 1979 when I took a creative writing class as a senior in high school. I started writing poetry more seriously once I was in college when I took more creative writing classes," Bishop explained, "My teachers and the other students in those classes encouraged me a lot. The college I went to, Oberlin College, was a place where creativity in general was greatly encouraged and supported. Going there taught me about exploring my abilities fully and respecting and developing my creativity." Like closing the ends of a circle, Bishop explained writing poetry provides her with something to give back to her TAMIU students when teaching.

Give someone a chance to feel like they have done something special by making your high-risk pregnancy a little more bearable." Dawn Swenson was 35 years old when she conceived Rory, who is now two years old. During this time she was a community college art teacher and graphic artist for Skylines, but her busy life screeched to a halt when she began bleeding very early in her pregnancy. She was diagnosed with placental abruptus through ultrasound, and she describes her condition as a painful one "since the abruption site was a large bruise between my uterus and placenta which would open and bleed periodically with any exertions." After Dawn experienced bouts of bleeding at seven, nine, and 14 weeks' gestation, her doctor placed her on modified bedrest for the rest of her pregnancy. She continued to teach on-line courses through the summer, but gave up her graphics position to keep her baby.

From Hatton, go 5 miles north on Highway 18 then turn west and go 1/4 mile until you reach a farmstead on the north side of the road. Turn into the drive way and the cemetery is in a grove of trees behind the house. This is a small cemetery with the burials of the Swenson Family who homesteaded the land back about 120 years ago.
