    Extractions: INTRODUCTION Sir Robert Southwell Papers A substantial volume, bound in the Middle Hill boards of Sir Thomas Phillipps' great collection, the collection contains an important series of letters regarding English Catholicism and the "Popish Plot." The letters, together with retained copies of answers, are addressed to British diplomat Sir Robert Southwell and concern Edward Coleman (who was unjustly accused of treason by Titus Oates) and a subsequent, but related, controversy with the great French Jansenist logician, Antoine Arnauld. In 1678, Titus Oates, a clever and bold perjurer, concocted and published charges that the English Catholics were about to assissinate King Charles II, subvert Protestantism in England, and reconvert the Country to Romanism by fire and sword. The charges were widely believed and caused a great panic. One of the first victims of Oates was Edward Coleman, tried and executed in 1678. He was the first of 35 persons executed on the testimony of Oates. One of the witnesses called in the trial was Sir Robert Southwell (1635 - 1702), a civil servant and diplomatist, whose testimony was generally favorable to Coleman. When it became obvious that the "Popish Plot" was a gigantic fraud, Antoine Arnauld (1612 -1694; then living in the Netherlands) wrote a book in defense of the English Catholics

Robert Southwell was born at Horsham St. Faith's, Norfolk, England, in 1561; hanged at Tyburn, 21 February, 1595. His grandfather, Sir Richard Southwell, had been a wealthy man and a prominent courtier in the reign of Henry VIII. His grandfather had been a prominent man in Henry VIII's court and the family remained among the elite of the land. He was so beautiful as a young boy that a gypsy stole him. He was soon recovered by his family and became a short, handsome man, with gray eyes and red hair. It was Richard Southwell who in 1547 had brought the poet Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, to the block, and Surrey had vainly begged to be allowed to "fight him in his shirt". Curiously enough their respective grandsons, Robert Southwell and Philip, Earl of Arundel, were to be the most devoted of friends and fellow-prisoners for the Faith. On his mother's side the Jesuit was descended from the Copley and Shelley families, whence a remote connexion may be established between him an the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Robert Southwell loved to write. He saw God in the world around him. His writings were a reflection of all that is true and beautiful. The simplicity of Robert`s writing gives it a clearer picture of his soul than do the most detailed accounts for his life, because he put everything inside him into his writings. He was born in England around A.D. 1561. He went to school in France where he realized his calling. He wanted to convert people with his writings. At seventeen he applied to become a Jesuit priest. They refused his first request because of his age. His first recorded writings showed his disappointment; "...Alas, where am I, and where shall I be? A wanderer in a dry parched land." Soon, however, he was accepted into the Jesuit novitate in Rome, and two years later he began his English mission. In the time of the "Protestant Reformation," the King of England had made himself the head of the Church. Life was tough for priests. Their lives often ended on heroic martyrdom. This didn`t stop Southwell. The devotion he had to the Catholic Church made him a dangerous man in the eyes of the English monarchy. In 1592, after six years of active missionary work in England, Robert was arrested by order of the King. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London until he was hung at Tyburn on February 21, 1595. He was a martyr at the age of thirty-four.
