Much of his writing demonstrates the influence of the respected American poets, Walt Whitman and Ezra Pound, as well as intimations of mysticism exemplified in Far Eastern forms. His experiences as a logger and ranger in the Pacific Northwest were inspirations for his first two collections of poetry: Riprap (1959) and Myths and Texts Many of his later works focus on alternatives to city living and show a reverence for nature and a deep interest in the philosophies of the East. The latter is a characteristic that seems an almost ubiquitous attribute possessed by many other Beat writers. Perhaps this quality respect and toleration for the world around oneself are what make these writers as interesting as they are accessible.

Initially inspired by East Asian landscape painting and his own experience within "a chaotic universe where everything is in place," Snyder's vision was further stimulated by Asian art and drama, Gaia history, Native American performance and storytelling, the practice of Zen Buddhism, and the varied landscapes of Japan, California, Alaska, Australia, China, and Taiwan. While a few individual sections of the poem have been published in literary magazines and seven poems in a chapbook, Snyder's ardent fans have waited patiently through the past forty years for the completion of Mountains and Rivers Without End . Extractions: What's New Catalog Order About Us "The greatest of living nature poets."- Los Angeles Times Gary Snyder teaches literature and wilderness thought at the University of California at Davis and lives with his family on San Juan Ridge in the Sierra foothills. He was born on May 8, 1930 in San Francisco, Calif., to Harold Alton and Lois (Willkie) Snyder and raised in Washington and Oregon on small farms. When he was 15 he climbed Mount St. Helens. He joined the Mazamas Climbing Club and the Wilderness Society, and climbed many of the northwest's major snow peaks. Snyder received a degree in literature and anthropology from Reed College in 1951. After briefly studying linguistics at Indiana University, he completed three years of graduate work in Asian languages at the University of California at Berkeley. He also worked on the docks in San Francisco, read Buddhist philosophy and wrote poetry. During the 1950's Snyder became involved with the San Francisco Beat movement. After Snyder and Jack Kerouac climbed Matterhorn Peak in the northern Sierra Nevada, Kerouac used Snyder as the model for Japhy Ryder, the itinerant mountain-climbing poet of Dharma Bums (1958), a man who took his Zen practice beyond the confines of formal study.

At Reed, Snyder published his first poems in a student journal. He also spent at least one summer working as a seaman. Extractions: brief excerpt from David Burner's Making Peace with the Sixties (Princeton University Press, 1996) In Snyder's writings or the sixties, nature, sex, the unconsciousbasic materials for much of the counterculturetake, the place of the exacting personal encounters with the outer and inner world that he had once sought in Zen discipline. Ecology and the tribal community, the need for humankind to relearn intimate connection with a particular place and soil, are the essential themes of his essays in The Old Ways , collected in 1972. Of the knowledge that a people acquires of its locality, Snyder writes, "a spirit of what it was to be there evolved, that spoke of a direct sense of relation to the 'land'-which really means, the totality, of the local bio-region system, from cirrus clouds to leaf-mold." A knowledge of place contributes to knowledge of self, for the self is composite. "Part of you is out there waiting to come into you, and another part of you is behind you, and the 'just this' of the ever-present moment holds all the transitory little selves in its mirror." Such is the wisdom of peoples who have learned to keep within their ecological limits. In dark contrast stand the imperial peoples, who have discovered that by invading another ecological system they can drain energy from it. From wisdom comes a perception of the soundness of the whole universe. Snyder tells of the concept in India of the universe-as-energy as a voice, a song stirring within the still and silent Brahma: mantra chanting is a chanting of the fundamental syllables of that voice, a return to the first energy of the universe.
