Extractions: This is a excellent example of world-building. Slonczewski creates two totally different worlds and cultures. Shora: a world of women who have genetically engineered their total world and Valedon: a world that worships war and warriors. When Valedon decides to invade Shora, the inhabitants use nonviolent means to defeat them. This novel has wonderful characters, romance between a boy of Valadon decides to live on that world and young shora woman.

Extractions: Dr. Michael O'Conner [E221 Home] [Syllabus] [Assignments/Grading] [Attendance] ... [Student Posts] Critical Essay SummaryExample Two In an essay appearing in the Kenyon Review , Joan L. Slonczewski critiques two novels which are based on extraordinary visions of women whose lives are devoted to service. These novels, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Magnificent Spinster by May Sarton, both raise interesting questions dealing with the role of women in society. Slonczewski both summarizes and gives opinions on the content of these novels. Focusing on The Handmaid's Tale , points are made dealing with the role of feminism, the theme of sexuality, the role of the Christian church, the subjugation of women, and the dangerous trends that are present in contemporary American society. The review begins by simply summarizing the important events that occur during the novel The Handmaid's Tale , in which a dystopia of the future is created where a cult based on religion rules the United States, which is now known as the Republic of Gilead. This society is plagued with widespread infertility, resulting from previous pollution of the environment, diseases that have been spread sexually, as well as other mistakes of the modern world. The women who have remained fertile have been summoned to become "handmaids", whose purpose is to bear children for the ruling males. Slonczewski points out that this is similar to the biblical handmaid Bilhah, who served her master Jacob because his wife Rachel was not able to conceive. Atwood's main character, Offred, is leading a difficult life, and the other female characters are working mostly as domestics. The exception is the Aunts, whose job is to train the handmaids and supervise hangings at the Salvaging Wall.

Extractions: Joan Slonczewski (geb.
