Extractions: I was born in 1949 in Leningrad, USSR (now St. Petersburg, Russia); in 1983 I emigrated to the United States, leaving behind a twenty-year career in photography and journalism. Given my first camera at the age of seven, I have thought of myself as a photographer since I was eight. My first national recognition came in 1964, when my photographs were published in Sovietskoye Photo , the only Soviet photography magazine, followed the next year by an article about me featuring my photographs. I attended Leningrad University, 1967-1973, and received M.A. in journalism and photojournalism. While at the university, I worked as a photographer for university departments and for the university newspaper. After receiving my degree, I worked as a free-lancer, as well as a staff journalist and photographer for various Leningrad newspapers and publications. I also worked as an advertising photographer for the Graphics Arts Agency (an agency of the Union of Soviet Artists), for which I produced more than 20 books. I began making portraits of cultural figures when I was in my teens. I have made hundreds of portraits of Russian and Western cultural figures: poets, artists, film makers, dissident political figures, journalists, including Andrey Sakharov, Vaclav Havel, Andrey Tarkovsky, Derek Walcott, Czeslaw Milosz, Randy Newman, Michelangelo Antonioni, Susan Sontag, Allen Ginsberg, Israel Lopez, Joseph Mankiewicz, Eduardo Galeano, Seamus Heaney, David Mamet, Dizzy Gillespie, Joseph Brodsky and many others.

Extractions: Victor Nemchinov On March 11, 1998, the Russian Consti-tutional Court handed down an unprecedented decision, abolishing the feudal rights that have, until now, allowed the state to confiscate an artists work without due process of law. The issue was brought to the Courts attention by two citizens who questioned the administrative norms of the Customs Code and the Code on Administrative Infractions. The rules in question permitted officials forcibly to confiscate personal property for the states use without paying compensation. Aleksei Pestriakov, the first plaintiff, alleged that the state illegally expropriated his Izh-brand hunting weapons. In a related case, artist Marina Gagloeva complained that she had been wrongly deprived of her own artwork. The latter occurrence, which is far from unusual in Russia, raises serious questions about the rights of Russian citizens to retain control over their intellectual property and the fruits of their personal labor. After a successful exhibit of her paintings last year in France, Gagloeva decided not to sell her artwork. Instead, intending to keep her paintings in her personal collection, she shipped them back home to Russia. Thus they landed in the Pulkovskaya Customs House warehouse where customs officials confiscated the works for the benefit of the state. How could this happen?

The principal subject of the Planetarium's activity is to read public lectures and implement scientific and artistic programs in astronomy and cosmonautics, to form scientific mentality on the basis of generalized achievements of the modern natural science. In the observatory of the Moscow Planetarium one can watch spots on the Sun, the Moon, planets and other heavenly bodies by means in the telescope. Many of these books came to our notice after being donated to Bet Tikvah Synagogue's library, which itself began after Mrs Tony Kerstein discovered that the results of Tony's rampant bibliophilia had taken over the Kerstein airing cupboard. Click on the links below (arranged in alphabetical order, by author) for reviews to each book. If you'd like to buy the book or find out more, you can surf direct to the online bookstore Amazon.co.uk from the reviews (click on the book titles at the head of each review.) Remember, no title is too obscure for the Great Library of Herodium, and many titles that are out of print or otherwise hard to find can be borrowed from the library by Bet Tikvah members.
